We have a sump pump and it's working fine. The rug is just a throw rug my brother threw down to put under his stuff. Not permanent and not staying.

We do have some effervescence on the walls in a couple of spots. I know this will need to be dealt with. I'm hoping it's just a matter of extending the gutters further from the house and adding some dirt to create a steeper grade.

What's making me nervous is the way this seems to come from the floor up.

I don't know much about basements, foundation, or mitigating water. Is this going to end up being a huge mess where I have to hire someone to excavate?

We would like to finish this basement someday but is that even realistic? I guess I'd settle for just being able to safely store things down there to be honest.

    Thanks!

The autopilot is really good for getting you very, very close to planets. Without it, a lot of new players smash full speed into the ground upon arrival.

Honestly, this game is nice because there is no real penalty for drifting off. Just die a few times and get used to it if possible. Although I guess phobias aren't so simple to overcome? Anyway, enjoy this game. It's really a unique experience. Come back and let me know what you think? Also, do the DLC! Drifting off into space isn't a concern in the DLC but there are...other concerns. It was a Halloween release so...

Alright, so one of my favorite things to do at night is throw on a great audiobook and play a video game...but it has to be a very specific type of video game. No meaningful dialogue or plot, no math or strategizing, and lots of hyper addictive gameplay that you can almost do subconsciously.

Here are the games I've found like this so far:

    1. Trials Rising (and it's predecessors). I've actually made some global leaderboards in this game. It seems so simple when you start the campaign mode, then you learn about ninja mode and it's suddenly a different game.

    2. Olli Olli world

    3. Skater XL, Session, Skate series, Tony Hawk series

    4. Lonely Mountains Downhill

    5. Descenders

    6. Any multiplayer shooter (COD, Fortnite, etc.)

    7. Trackmania - not my thing but it definitely scratches this itch for a lot of people.

    8. Mudrunner and Snowrunner series.

Here are some that did not work for me.

    1. Sekiro - I just get too into it. Can't multitask.

    2. Vampire Survivors - just not into it.

    3. Rogue likes - never enjoyed them.

    4. No Man's Sky - amazing game but I prefer to play it co-op. Already conquered it anyway.

    Any other suggestions?

Interesting! Totally respect your right not to like it. Two things about the cutscene though (without spoiling).

    1. The cutscene is 15-30 seconds long depending on...things. When I played back on PS4 I just assumed it was a necessary loading screen and it wasn't different from any other PS4 games. But I can see how it's frustrating from a PC perspective when you don't have loading screens usually. Plus they give you something entertaining to watch that's always different!

    2. The game was as a continuation of a college project by a super small team of friends. I am pretty blown away by what they accomplished and I have overlooked far worse things in far worse games.

I've talked about this game on Tildes before and had a few people come back later and thank me for the recommendation.

This game is unlike anything else out there right now. It's beautiful, heart-wrenching, challenging, and fun. But you can only experience it once.

The single thing blocking your progress is knowledge. You could technically beat the game in about 10 minutes, but only if you know how. And you definitely won't stumble across the answer until you've figured everything else out.

You play for 15+ hours, then you know the answer and it's over. You can never experience it again. Luckily, the Halloween DLC is absolutely incredible and also pretty spooky. So I did get to scratch that itch one more time.

As others have said, play with a controller and check the clues board in the ship when you get stuck. I'll add to that - if you're stuck, go somewhere, anywhere. You won't accidentally find anything you shouldn't, and if you do, it won't make sense anyway until it's supposed to. Try anything, even if it seems like a stretch. Use every tool they give you in creative ways. The devs thought of everything you might try and everywhere you might look. Some of things you think you're cheesing end up being achievements.

Use the autopilot for speed and accuracy but also have fun with the physics.

If you must google something, add "no spoilers" to the end of your search. Be so careful because this is the easiest game to spoil.

I am so envious of people who get to play this for the first time. I'd wipe it from my brain and play it again if I could.

Maybe? I mean, you're talking about a pretty big systemic change and then asking 300 million Americans to all agree to make it simultaneously.

I don't think you can wear the same dress to work every day for a year and keep your job. Nevermind the fact that it would get destroyed and isn't appropriate for all weather.

Fast fashion is a huge problem but a lot of Americans do genuinely struggle to afford clothing for them and their families. It's hard to affordably clothe multiple family members in a country that almost demands a certain standard for working and middle class people.

You can make it your life mission and explain to employers, your brother's wedding guests, friends, and first dates why you wear the same jeans everywhere but then you still haven't solved the issue. And eliminating these businesses from poor countries like Bangladesh has hurt their economies in the past too because you've taken jobs away from them.

I genuinely have no idea what the answer is but I wouldn't always say it's as simple as individual choices. This is more of a systemic evil.

This hits part of the answer.

I think a lot of lefties (including a younger version of myself) think that rich people giving away their money would improve things for everyone else. But if Bill Gates should give his money away to the lower and middle class Americans, shouldn't the lower and middle class Americans also turn around and give their money to the destitute children in Central America?

As you get older and lose that knee jerk anger at the system though, you realize it's more complex than that. Bill Gates has done more good using his money to run his foundation and build his business than he would have been able to do by simply giving it away. Look at the good his foundation has done. Think of how much technological progress has been enabled by the existence of Windows computers - the COVID vaccine alone has saved millions of lives and it would have never happened without advanced computer software. That's just one vaccine for one disease.

Clearly we need to slow inequality. We need to ensure that rising tides lift all ships. Oftentimes our rising tides sink the small ships and I do think that various forms of wealth redistribution and well-regulated capitalism will help with these things. But it's not as simple as giving all the money away. When the wealthy create good jobs and help increase our quality of life, they are probably doing the best thing they can do with their money. It's a problem when they act purely out of greed and wreck lives to get rich though.

Here's my guess. Not sure how to define this genre exactly, but I'll drop a few keywords that I think might capture the genre: Liminal spaces, dark, night time, synth music, nostalgia. I see a lot of different mediums that are all circling around these things right now. Here's a short list:

-There are a bunch of "night drive" and "dreamscape" style music playlists out there. Seem to be more and more popular.

-Movies like Bladerunner 2049 and The Corner Office. Even Dune can fall into this category.

-Shows like Severance or Stranger Things

-Video games like The Backrooms, The Long Drive, Pacific Drive, Lethal Company, etc.

-General audiences becoming more aware of things like liminal spaces and the Backrooms through tik toks, reels, and forums like Reddit.

Another awesome comment. Your thoughts on nuclear families in separate units causing us to be poorer is pretty fascinating. I am of the opinion that the economy would adjust to any other standard of living though. Having women stay at home was a totally viable economic situation for a long time. When women went to work, the economy got used to that and now you pretty much need two incomes to build wealth.

Multi-gen homes would be great for a generation or two and then they'd be a requirement for basic living because the economy would adjust to fit that. Not like everyone is just going to walk around with excess cash forever because we started living that way.

    Just my two cents.

Btw, I'm in Western New York. Suburban, not rural. But definitely one of the last affordable suburban areas in the country. It's a hot market here for exactly that reason.

Unfortunately, I'm teacher trapped. I have tenure, a few years of pay raises I wouldn't get elsewhere, and amazing healthcare. I can't leave or move very far easily.

Excellent comment and I'm tagging it exemplary because you came with receipts. To clarify, I was already voting Biden and would never in a million years advocate for Trump. Biden is clearly more fiscally and socially responsible, but more than that I think Trump is a Nazi surrounded by Nazis with no exaggeration.

All of that aside, I still don't think those numbers paint a full picture of this economy. Young families are getting bent over right now. I know because I and all of my friends are young families. Daycare and a mortgage will easily eat up 50-75% of your takehome pay for one or two children. That leaves you with 25% of your take home to handle literally everything else and that's simply not realistic or healthy. Without Biden's SAVE plan for college loans, my wife and I would both be totally screwed.

I think the huge number of Americans who already own homes at ~3% interest and those who own without a mortgage are in great shape. The rest of us are fucked.

Those numbers are going to look much worse when a huge number of young people have thrown away money renting instead of owning. Wrong or right, home ownership has always been the main way that the middle class builds wealth in this country.

I'm sorry, but it's just too easy to simplify or manipulate those kinds of numbers. They don't paint the true picture. I'm living it. I'm looking at people who are living it. My elder millennial coworkers are doing great. Us younger millennials are not. It's a really shitty time to raise a family.

My wife and I spent all morning agonizing over our budget today because we are trying to get a house. We aren't looking at giant or beautiful homes either. The house we are currently looking at is modest, one story, two bedrooms in a low cost of living area. We are getting a small bit of help from her parents and we still can't make the numbers work without her picking up extra shifts for at least three years. That's not great. Getting any help from parents is a massive privilege that the kids I grew up with in my very poor hometown would never have. Hell, I wouldn't have it if I didn't marry this woman. My family has shit for money. I honestly don't know what they'll do if they don't already own. Wait for wages to catch up and hope the market stagnates I guess.

Statistics don't paint the whole picture. I posted on here recently about my home buying experience.

Wife is a nurse, I'm a teacher, and we are about to yeet roughly half of our take home pay to buy a very small home in a low cost of living area. And the only thing enabling us to do this is the insane (and frankly disgusting, morally wrong) amount of equity we gained from buying a beater condo right before COVID. I honestly don't know what my little brother is going to do since he's renting. He's never getting a home without family help - which my family can't offer him.

Groceries are through the roof, subscription prices went up for everything, cars are still insanely expensive, etc. I know the economy isn't doing well because my friends and I have reigned in our "fun" spending. That's not a good sign for a bunch of middle and lower-middle class 30 year olds.

Don't even get me started on daycare. For two kids you can expect to pay about $20k in daycare costs per year.

Inflation was what? 8%? My raise was still 3%.

I genuinely do not believe the numbers and I've always been a guy who trusts the data and the experts. Hopefully things will stagnate a bit and wages can catch back up? That would be great.

I think Trump converted them himself. His mishandling of COVID was enough to convince a lot of people.

But four years is a long time to forget. Someone once wrote that Trump's whole personality works better when he's an insurgent rather than an incumbent and that seemed logical to me, unfortunately.

What scares me most is the current economy. I'll take a bunch of heat for saying this - happens every time I say it on Tildes - but our economy is not doing as well as they say, certainly not for the average person. I think people will blame Biden. Doesn't help that naive college kids seem willing to throw the baby out with the bathwater when it comes to the Palestine situation.
