I do feel a little bit like this is a solution waiting for a problem, though. :)

I mean... I like the idea of a wiki, as I said in that other thread, but I'm not sure what the use of it is right now (given that it's not for documentation/help/FAQ-type stuff). For example, what would we use it for in ~humanities?

No - that's why I said it's a solution waiting for a problem. It will be useful in the future, but I don't see it being useful now. Okay. Conceded. This is a good demonstration of what I said to...

        I feel like you’re conflating “not useful” with “not useful now”;

No - that's why I said it's a solution waiting for a problem. It will be useful in the future, but I don't see it being useful now.

I still see use cases for it with what we have (the Black Mirror thread, the music club, the programming challenges, the two writing prompt threads…),

        Okay. Conceded.

~humanities might want an archive of the threads repeated most often, or might get a weekly “let’s discuss this philosophy” thread, or develop a language‐learning club or two.

This is a good demonstration of what I said to you yesterday: I'm much better at finding flaws in other people's ideas than coming up with ideas of my own. :/

this might be an embarrassing waste of the server costs I’m paying to run it

:O Don't spend too much money on this!

We’ll know in a week, depending on whether or not anyone but me edits it. :P

A week may be too early to tell. I'm imagining it could take months for a Tildes-related wiki to truly come into its own.

You say that like it’s not a useful skill.

Oh, it's certainly useful. It was one of the main underpinnings of my work as a Business Analyst: analysing other people's ideas, seeing where the synergies were - and the clashes. But I tend to polish and improve (and criticise!) other people's ideas rather than produce my own. I'm a sidekick and supporter rather than a leader and creator. I'm that person who asks those questions. I'm the kid who points out that the Emperor has no clothes. It contributes, but it makes me look negative, even if my motives are to help.

Not quite sure about ~humanities, but I think a fun use would be to try and crowdsource ~ specific recommendations and build up a knowledge base that way. Thinking things like the various 4chan wikis, but with more room to grow than the weird board culture of 4chan allows. I guess you could apply that idea to ~humanities reading lists, but I don't know if that's something users would want there.

I guess the point is that if they do, the wiki is there.

I can certainly see a use for this in the future. I started my moderation "career" in /r/AskHistorians, and one of my big contributions there was to expand and restructure their wiki-based FAQ while I was there (they're still using my structure, 4 years later). And recommended reading lists for the various disciplines are always good. But I feel like these are "tomorrow" projects rather than "today" projects. I think we need more people with more expertise, and more activity, before these things become useful.

Maybe add the ~games suggestion threads?

Edit: Alright I think I got most of them, but I'm not very good at searching through this site so some might not have even been considered. I may have been excessively inclusive, so feel free to change it.

I've taken of it for the most part, but while doing so I noticed that the wiki logo is only subtly different from the Tildes logo (diagonally flipped?). Paging between Tildes and the wiki was a little confusing, could a more distinct logo be used? I would suggest a w (for wiki) made in the same style as the Tildes logo, but a more different (even if ugly) alternative is fine with me as well

Awesome, this will be useful for keeping track of threads, especially while there's no search. I guess this brings the question: do we want group wikis on Tildes like on Reddit?

Thanks a bunch @Kat! I've been working on writing something for the ~tech bit, but it's a lot of work and i'm kind of done with it for today. So I was wondering if you could enable the comment syntax thing? It would help me keep track of where I was and what still needed to be done (and communicate that with others!

Thank you! It works fine (I made a comment on the intro bit on that page I started, and it seems to still be there!)

I take it dokuwiki doesn't support markdown? If that's the case, a quick google search seems to show that there are markdown plugins availiable, like this one:...

I just about lost it at that. This is a great idea, well implemented. Thanks!

except it’s less of an existential fucking nightmare to work with on my end.
