I'm curious. I know - or at least hear - that there are people who really do want fabulous wealth, several huge mansions, one or two yachts, et cetera, and that there are people who really do want to settle down with a single significant other in a large suburban house and raise 2 to 3 children. I don't understand either of these desires, and I'm sure there's a lot more variety out there, so:

What does your ideal life look like? If you know and can articulate it, why?

I'm sitting here eating a pan crust pizza with pepperoni, sausage, mozzarella+romano cheese, and easy mushroom and basil. I feel that this is an ideal pizza with it's mixture of crunch, spices, and sweetness. The leftovers are perfect for reheating in a skillet the next day. The crust has softened but is soaked with enough grease that the skillet makes the crust have an almost puff pastry style crunch/crumble. This is probably my ideal pizza.

I'm currently in the process of reading the excellent "Lessons Learned in Software Testing: A Context-Driven Approach". Early on the following is mentioned.

Test common threats before exotic threats.

Seems reasonable enough. That said, it got me thinking It'd be cool to generate a list of such threats for future devs/testers to draw on. So...I'm calling on the collective experience of any Tilders involved in iOS or Android development to lend a hand.

In your time working on mobile, what issues have you encountered that you would you classify as exotic? I.e those issues that infrequently arise but when they do can cause major damage. Any and all help is appreciated.

It was mentioned, and I agree, that Tildes is a little serious. As such, let's tell some jokes! And not good jokes. What's the fun in that? I want your worst clean joke. Aim for the groan, the hiss of pain, the holding of noses while fleeing into the night! Be it short form or shaggy dog, bring it here!

I'll start with the joke I pull out as an icebreaker:

Two muffins were sitting in the oven. One muffin said to the other: "Boy, is it getting hot in here, or is it just me?" The second muffin said "Ahhh! A talking muffin!"

It's terrible, I know. Can you top me?

I'll start by saying yes and no, but the reasons for my answer are personal and familial ,so if you don't like that skip my answer.

Yes, because... I am the only person in my family who speaks English (We're Brazilian) on not just on a basic level, but actually good enough to talk to actual native English speakers, listen to great, (unfortunately lacking alternatives on other languages) YouTube channels and even good enough to get an actual English certificate from Cambridge, along with actually being somewhat knowledgeable.

      More detailed explanation

No, because... my parents are poor, and I'm probably weird to my classmates. My father has worked as a mechanic since he was 11 (which was actually quite common when he was a kid in 90s brazil) and makes somewhere between 1 and 1.5 times the minimum wage (estimations because he is self employed) and my mother wanted to be a seamstress but she ended up being a cashier in a fast food and then in a flower shop and she is now unemployed now she also wants to be self employed by selling painted embroidery via Instagram which is great but competition is stiff meaning that until she somehow gets a serious following to sell her stuff to my father is the sustaining the 3 of us on what he makes in the month.

On the 'I'm quite weird to my classmates' bit, It's essentially by watching English content, I am effectively on a different platform with a different audience and different creators than them. here are the 250 largest channels in Brazilian YouTube for context.
You know them as well as I do but it's incredibly annoying when you enjoy completely different content and vice versa. More on this also.

It can be anything: possible/impossible, material/immaterial.

I want the Ergodox EZ programmable keyboard. In my estimations, taking into account currency exchange, shipping and import taxes, it would cost R$ 2323.2 (2323.2 Brazilian Reais) to bring one home. That's 232% of our minimum wage.

So I bought some cheap games on the PSN and a 15 dollars vertical mouse instead.

It could be the final piece to your prized collection, a person you talked to before they seemingly disappeared, a story you read that has since been deleted, etc.

In my case, I really wanted to find a website called notebookinhand.com, a forum I came across while I was a teenager in the early 2010s. It was solely dedicated to people describing their hobbies, and the community seemed very nice and welcoming, and I also like how the site was designed. It looks like it's been shut down but I can't stop thinking about it!

So, tell me what's your internet "unicorn", so to speak.

I post a fair amount of poetry to Tildes, with the hope of getting feedback or starting discussion.

Yet, as you can see from looking at the poem tag, there generally isn't any kind of discussion on poetry posts. Even Bishop's departure post only received six comments.

So, why is this? What stops you commenting on poems? I would like to have discussions about what I write with the people here. I don't know if there's something I can do to make it easier to engage with me regarding my work, or if there's something else preventing the discussion.

Kitchen knives are frequently used to stab people. This results in serious injury or often death. Most stabbing murders are perpetrated with kitchen knives, reflecting the huge numbers of knives available (most homes have one), and where most murders happen (in the home). (I'm talking about UK here).

Kitchen knives have a cutting edge and usually a sharp piercing point. There's nothing that can be done to make the cutting edge safer. But we can look at the pointy tip.

Pointy tips are useful, but we tend to find that only professional chefs or experienced home cooks use them. Most people cooking at home don't use or need such a pointy tip.

There are some companies releasing knives without the pointy tip, and I'm interested to know what you think.

My hard drives seem to almost always be cluttered messes, so I'm curious how other people handle file storage. Feel free to use any of these questions as prompts, too:

      • Do you do backups? If so, how? (Cloud storage, offline backups, etc.)
      • Do you use your OS's default user folders (Documents, Pictures, Downloads, Desktop, etc.) or do you opt for a more custom scheme?
      • Do you use your browser's default download directory, or do you do something more custom?
      • Do you navigate through your files using a file browser, the command line, or both?
      • Do you have any naming conventions for files and folders? (Dash/underscore/space delimiting? Lower/uppercase?)
      • Where do you store code repositories (if that's something you do), and do you make a distinction between code repositories and documents?
      • How do you deal with programs that automatically create directories in your workspaces without your permission? (I'm looking at you, IDEs with "Projects" folders.)
      • How do you handle media storage? Do you use any library managers for ebook/pdf files, image files, music files, video files, etc.?
      • How do you handle document/note storage? Do you use files in the Documents folder, or do you use an alternative method like cloud-based office tools, or some sort of wiki-ish program like Indigrid or Trillium?
      • If you use a Linux-based OS, where do you put sandboxed/portable applications (e.g. snap, flatpak, appimage)?

Red Dead Redemption 2: Special Edition

The first Red Dead Redemption is probably my most-played console game. I just really enjoyed it as an open world sandbox and completed the singleplayer portion of the game something like nine times.

If I bought it, I seriously doubt I would touch the multiplayer portion of Red Dead Redemption 2. I didn't bother with it at all in the first game and never really got into the multiplayer bits of Grand Theft Auto IV or V either.

So, my main concern is how Red Dead Redemption 2's singleplayer experience compares to the first game. Is it just as good? Better? Will I find myself similarly drawn into it as I was with the first game?

It seems that movies are getting longer and longer nowadays, and some people (like me) are incapable of holding their bladder for more than 1.5-2 hours, especially when movie-theater-sized drinks are involved. So this got me thinking: is it time to bring back the movie intermission?

      I'm curious:

      1. Are you for or against the idea of longer movies having an intermission? Why or why not?
      2. How do you think adding an intermission to the movies would affect the experience? And how might it affect the film industry and the films themselves?

Time for some inspiration. I've been working on a few SaaS applications for the past 2-3 months, and have only really got into it full time recently, and I'm totally in code-mode now, so I thought I'd ask to see what other people have created in either their spare time, or to earn some money.

Link your app/tool/product/service! What tools, frameworks, or services did you build it with? What does it accomplish? How did you express your creativity while working on it? What's next for what you're creating?

    37. How do you cope with the apathy/jadedness that comes from living in massive, complex systems? (i.e. systems where individual action has almost no impact, but collective action could have an impact)

This is a question that's been bothering me a lot lately. It recently popped up in another Tildes thread. This comment from @pseudolobster sums up an example of such a system (streaming services becoming dominant forms of media distribution):

Someone's going to spend $10/mo for the streaming service, the movie is 1/10000th of their catalog, $0.001 goes to the middlemen, who give $.00001 to [the creator]. [...] If I could somehow give 1 cent to the actual creator, I'd have increased their revenue by orders of magnitude.

In a vacuum, the choice "do I steam or do I pirate" from a single person doesn't really do anything? But then, you could argue, we don't live in a vacuum. We discuss things with other people, which could influence their decisions. There could be a ripple effect, eventually shifting the overall outlook towards streaming/piracy on a group/community/society level. Or maybe, as change gets bigger, it becomes too finicky to really influence with the (nonexistent) power most of us have.

This could be generalized to so many things, and not just whether consumption can be ethical or not. With climate change, for example, I hear "well, whether I recycle as an individual doesn't really change anything when my output pales in comparison to the waste of large corporations." You could apply this to voter apathy, too. ("Well, whether or not I voted wouldn't have changed the outcome of the election.")

What do you think about this? Do you focus on the small actions, the larger systemic change, both, or neither? How do you feel about apathy/jadedness in these situations? How much of a moral offense is it to not do the "right" thing? Does the answer change if you're acting alone vs. encouraging others to act with you?

As we come to the close of another year, I thought it would be a neat idea for people to give their picks for the Best/Worst/Most/Least [something] of 2019. Think of these like awards, although some of them are not necessarily in categories people would want to win.

There are no limits and no criteria. Examples:
      Best Meme
      Worst Tweet
      Most Pretentious Startup
      Least Surprising Box Office Bomb

Anything is fair game -- do whatever you want! Get creative and have fun! Winners can be people, places, or things -- all 2019 nouns are eligible!

While I'm intending this to be mostly for fun, it's okay to give serious ones too, so if you want to tell me about, say, the legit Best Movie or the Most Transformative Hashtag of 2019, be my guest.

Make sure you don't just drop your award winners' names in the thread. Be sure to explain why they're deserving of their title.

Also, it's okay for one category to be awarded with more than one winner, so if someone else has already given their pick for, say, Best Season Finale, and you feel strongly that another deserves the win, add your pick and explain your thinking!

What’s your shampoo of choice, and why?

Shampoo is something relatively universal, so I’m hoping to get some neat answers out of the lovely Tildes community.

And I just got out of the shower, so I thought this might make for a good topic.
