So they're making an anime out of a game made out of a series of animes made out of a series of visual novels?

A lot of the other stories and characters in FGO are kind of crap, from the perspective of someone who enjoyed the original Fate/Stay Night visual novel. If I'd known they'd be making anime out of the best parts of FGO, and made by such well regarded studios, I might not have spent any time on the game at all.

I hope the TV series is good. I regretted watching Fate/Apocrypha on Netflix; only about 4 episodes out of 25 were worth watching. There's a new Fate/Extra anime on Netflix now, but I worry that'll be a waste of time too, because a lot of people dislike Extra.

I'm not as deeply immersed in nasuverse culture, but hasn't Fate always been kind of garbage as far as the actual story is concerned? Apocrypha was a drag but it did have some studio talent and love poured into it, same with Extra and UBW. If I'd watch FGO it'd be to watch some serious animation chops or to watch some characters I thought were enjoyable. That's how I partook of other Fate products anyways.

That's mostly true. I was disappointed with the Fate/Stay Night anime and don't remember if I finished it. First of all it's painful to see them attempt to squash an extremely long visual novel into a series of long and boring dialogue sequences in the anime. Also I felt like the characters' personalities were a lot different and less likable in the anime -- e.g. Rin being way too over-the-top tsundere, versus in the VN being intelligent and capable with a small bit of tsundere. So I understand why you might think the story is garbage, due to strange direction choices, even if the source material might have been really good in my opinion.

Honestly I don't follow much of the other Fate stuff, since they seemed to take it in all weird directions and with too many throwaway characters. I agree with you that I'd mostly watch their anime for the high budgets, not necessarily expecting anything on the storytelling/direction side.

Kara no Kyoukai / Garden of Sinners is a much better Nasu anime. The first few entries might even reach the "you'll like this even if you don't like anime" status, although later entries kind of dragged.

My entry point was Unlimited Bladeworks, which most fans haven't overly appreciated.

But I'll say this - If I ever want large doses of fighting, followed and interspersed with bits of history and philosophy, then Fate/X is always there for the taking, and I do enjoy that, as a lovely little guilty pleasure.

I may also be enjoying the fact that I can't be downvoted into oblivion for this opinion.
