There’s an impressive lineup of showrunners on board: Andre Nemec and Josh Appelbaum (Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol), along with Jeff Pinkner (Fringe) and Scott Rosenberg (Knightfall). Christopher Yost (Thor: The Dark World, Thor: Ragnarok) will write the first episode.

I notice there's no mention of putting Yoko Kanno & The Seatbelts back together to score the series. That's a rather glaring omission in my mind. The original soundtrack is one of the finest ever produced in any medium, and I'd be shocked (and happy) if another team could even make par with a replacement.

Oh wow -- good call. I absolutely just assumed Yoko Kanno & The Seatbelts would return for this.

I don't think we should consider all live action anime adaptations to be bad by nature. The US film industry has managed to do at least one manga adaptation well in the past (Edge of Tomorrow is an adaptation of All You Need is Kill).

The real problem is that animation and live action film are too similar to eachother. Fans will be upset at the adaptation no matter what happens. Take a look at two other adaptations the US film industry did: Ghost in the Shell and Oldboy. Oldboy copied many of the scenes from the Korean film in painstaking detail and yet fans of the original film still hate it. And while Ghost in the Shell tried it's best to be more fluid in it's adaptation, that actually angered the fanbase more than anything I have ever seen.

IMHO, we are living in a golden age for anime in the US right now; it's got nearly mainstream appeal and the film industry is clobbering over itself to attempt to appease it's fans.

I assume this will have a mostly white American cast? At least Cowboy Bebop will feel more natural that way than most other anime. I'm not a fan of the original, but Watanabe seems like a guy who always has a clear vision and I hope being a "consultant" is actually a meaningful role here...though I doubt that.

I have yet to see a good anime live action-adaptation. They either diverge to the point of ridicule (like Netflix's Death Note), or are faithful to a fault, which is frequently the case of the Japanese productions. Can't someone just, you know, make an anime movie that is actually good, not just good for die-hard fans?

This is something Marvel learned: some things look good on film, some don't. You gotta be faithful in some areas, and recreate in others. For example: Jotaro Kujo, as all members of the Joestar family, is handsome as fuck. Being handsome is as important for him as it is for Superman. This guy? Not handsome. He could be black for all I care, but he should be handsome.

While not anime, the movie "Edge of Tomorrow" was actually based on a Japanese light novel

The Kenshin live action movies are pretty good in my opinion. I cannot comment on the acting, but the costume are on point and the fight scenes are very enjoyable.

The slow motion deaths felt a bit too cheesy, but other than that I really feel like it did a really good job of capturing that Cowboy Bebop feel.

Yep - I'd be happy if they could get Watanabe to direct the Netflix show rather than just being a consultant. Sadly doesn't seem like that's what they're going for though.

Netflix is in the mode of throwing everything they can find at the wall in the hope that something sticks. They are desperate to cement themselves as the default streaming provider in a market that already has several (admittedly much shittier) competitors, and more coming along all the time (like Disney's upcoming offering). They have a ton of money to throw at this, so they can afford these (reckless imo) tactics.

Their corporate culture doesn't sound very healthy, either.
