What are some anime/manga that are underrated and/or not so popular?

I'm still fairly new to anime (~2.5 years) and have been just watching either classics/high rated anime or whatever everyone else is watching that season and really want to know what are some pretty good anime/manga that are underrated and overshadowed by huge influx of anime every season?

Mine picks would be:

  • One Outs : It's basically a Sports anime about Baseball with heavily focusing on mind games (similar to Death Note/Code Geass/etc) It is 8.4 on MAL but It's really underrated in terms of it's audience

  • Black Clover : It's really not that bad as people say it is. Yes the adaptation is bad but the story is really good, yeah it's basically generic shonen but it does the generic shonen things much better than other generic shonens. I'd still suggest the manga over the anime (with coming back to see the climax of arcs/seeing your favourite scenes being adapted)

For Manga:

  • Gokushufudou (The Way of the House Husband) : It's basically a manga about an ex-most wanted gangster now living as a house husband. It's one of the most funniest mangas I've read.

  • Vigilante: Boku no Hero Academia Illegals : It's a spinoff of My Hero Aca which is pretty cool but not really popular. The story could be boiled down to what would've happened if Midoriya wasn't able to pass the UA exams. Oh yeah and it's all canon (the main author verified this).

That's basically it for what I've read/watched.

Planetes, I found this sci-fi anime completely by chance and I was suprised by how good it was. At first it seems a simple story (and starts somewhat slow), but then, it shows its "real face" towards the middle of the series. It makes an analogy to a lot of problems that we face today as a society but also on our own personal lives. It also includes some romance, just so you know. In a very very simplistic overview: it's a story about garbage men in space. But you really have to find more by yourself :)

I am currently watching it (also found it by chance). And I agree, it's great. In terms of space-feel I think its the best I've watched.

Also one of my top picks but not one I shill as often. Toward the end of the series I spent about half an episode openly sobbing at one event so it has my endorsement!

Planetes had amazing accuracy of depicting space. Its story was also low key and nice ...in the beginning. Closer to the end someone in there started behaving like a psycho and that was a turnoff, really spoiled the show.

I never got the feeling of being popular just because I never saw it recommended anywhere along these years. Usually, I base the popularity of something by how many times I see the anime suggested in anime lists around the web.

Yes, I also really enjoyed the accuracy of depecting space, or at least, how a society / community in space would be in reality. Sometimes movies or tv shows exaggerate a bit on the futuristic side of things.

I totally forgot about that someone, but you are right. It got slightly annoying but nothing too serious to ruin the show, at least for me. Sometimes people with a big dream act erratically, just look at Elon Musk :)

Another promising (that I'm still yet to see) space-related anime is Space Brothers. But I think this anime doesn't fit this post. I have the feeling is somewhat popular, since, I've seen recommended here and there.

I opened this up to recommend that very same book. An absolutely wonderful manga. I actually haven't seen the anime yet. Still need to do that.

That's... disappointing. All they have to do is release a blu-ray box set and they get my money. It's a bad business model to not let customers throw money at you.

A lot of anime is like that, sadly. And a lot of stuff released by the BBC, too. They will literally not take your money even if you show up at their door and write them a check. Licensing ruins everything; this is why anime and British TV torrents are still such a big deal. In a lot of cases you just can't buy something legally. I've been sticking to legitimate media as much as I can, but trying to watch anime has been making me reconsider.

Like @masochist said, not legally. But you can definitely find it in one of the most popular anime streaming websites.

    I thought of another one!

Katanagatari - The studio that did this masterpiece didn't license or market it very well. The light novel was written by Nisio Issin, who some of you might know as the author of the Monogatari series. It follows the story of a master martial artist and a spy who team up to find a collection of legendary swords. The art style is unusual, but has an excellent charm, and the animation itself is top notch.

I also agree on this one! I started watching this anime just out of not having nothing else to see and I was also suprised that it kept me hooked. The art style was probably one of the things that put me off at the beginning but then it grows on you. You really start seeing how beautiful it is. It really has a charm that I can not explain, I think. Not sure about the girl, but I liked the characters also, even though, they don't have the most complex character building around. Again, not sure why, but it left a good impression on me. :)

Katanagatari was great. That ending especially! I've heard of but not watched/read Monogatari, is it similarly good in your opinion? I seem to recall it's structured in a perculiar way.

The Monogatari series is significantly different from Katanagatari. I haven't watched the whole thing, just a few episodes of Bakemonogatari (the first season) and it is much more like reading a novel with some pretty illustrations than watching an anime. There's plenty going on, don't get me wrong, even some ridiculous fights! Its just so densely packed with dialogue that it feels like a chore when I've attempted to watch it. Japanese not being a language I'm fluent in certainly doesn't help.

Now, don't take my review as the end all be all. I'm looking for some very specific things in my anime- and the Monogatari series hasn't had that for me. On the other hand, it is highly rated and well loved by a large number of fans. Many would say that it is Nissio Issin's best work.

seems really fun, 50 min per episode is welcomed if it's really that good. (besides it doesn't matter in binge watching) Thanks for recommending again dude

ACCA 13 seems really intriguing to me, if it does the political mind games correctly and in an involving way (say something like Code Geass), I'll be all down for it. Being animated by Madhouse is a plus too for not worrying about the animation quality

Note that it's dark and graphic. The narration is also quite unique, it's can seems slow but everything is deliberate, it's certainly on the artsy side.

Yona of the Dawn - The anime barely gets the story started, and its fairly typical josei romance, but I love the story of the exiled princess fighting to regain her country. There's a lot of good drama between the major players, and tons of sweet moments between her and the obvious love interest. The manga continues well past where the anime leaves off, and I hope one day to see more of it animated!

That show was more fun than it had any right to be. I thought "meh, I'll watch one or two more" after the first episode, wound up watching them all, and then found out there's no season 2? What??
