Which anime would you guys recommend for someone who just started watching anime?

Do you think I should start watching Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress?

As someone else said, full Metal alchemist Brotherhood is the ideal start for an action anime. For other genres, try the following: http://imgur.com/a/l9A1Z

This list is pretty good. I'm not terribly into anime, but the best-of-the-best stuff (mostly Miyazaki movies and a few absolutely iconic ones like Akira and Ghost in the Shell) make up some of my favorite movies of all time. That's basically the "Essentials" part of this list, although I'd put 100% of Miyazaki's movies in there (Nausicaa? Come on!). Also, an addition for the "weirder" shit: Mindgame.

As for tv shows, I always felt like Cowboy Bebop stands above the rest (yea, all of it), kinda towering up there like Ghibli movies for movies. I had hopes for Black Lagoon to scratch a similar itch but it never was quite as over-the-top wonderful. I also recently got into Attack on Titan, because of how plain absurd it is (no other genre does stuff like this), but a season or two in, it starts to drag in the usual anime ways. Honestly, I have a hard time getting into anime tv shows, they always seem very "thin" in content and overly convoluted. I also learned that there's a whole "shonen" genre that's basically aimed exclusively at teenage boys' power fantasies and explains why so many highly praised anime shows don't do anything for me. A lot of the stuff has a very, very specific target group and it helps to filter by that.

I've always found anime movies to be better than tv, with some exceptions. The problem with most anime tv, is that there is always far far too much filler, with whole episodes devoted to a gimmick (the notorious beach episode for example), while movies don't have the luxury. A recent exception was Bunny Girl Senpai, which was just incredible despite its terrible name.

I personally prefer the episodic format so long as it is pre-planned and doesn't have filler episodes. There are some things you can do with this format you can't do with full-length feature films. See Tatami Galaxy and Ergo Proxy for examples.

    Personally I first got into Berserk, Ninja Scroll, Vampire Hunter D, Gogol 13: The Professional and Cowboy Bebop when I was much younger. If I was to recommend newer shows that kind of fit a more action packed style check these;
    Parasyte (Action, Thriller, Horror)
    One Punch Man (Action, Comedy)
    KonoSuba (Comedy, Action, D&D)
Berserk (old and new) (Action, Horror, Adventure, D&D, War)
    DanMachi (D&D, Action, Comedy)
    Angolmois (History, Action, War)
    Goblin Slayer (D&D, Action)

From there you will have to decide what you liked or hated about each before I could give better recommendations.

Also kind of off topic, does anyone remember an anime from a couple years ago where the villian was this icy tyrant bitch with massive tits but she was in love with the protagonist. I seem to remember a character that used a massive pair of scissors as a weapon as well. I can't recall the name of it.

That definitely sounds like it from the description.

And though I'm personally not a fan, a lot of people also seem to like My Hero Academia, so it might also be worth a shot, at least if you're in to superhero stuff.

Little Witch Academia is also really good, it's like an anime tribute to Harry Potter and western cartoons, done in the best possible way.

I wouldn't really recommend kabaneri, no. If you were considering that, I would recommend shingeki no kyojin instead, it's really good and a great starter anime. Other than that, it really depends what kind of anime you want to watch. If you're into comedy/action you could try one punch man, mob psycho 100, assassination classroom, if you like sports you could try haikyuu, if you like darker stuff I'd recommend parasyte. There are also a few 'must watches' like Fullmetal alchemist: brotherhood, or hunterxhunter. In the end though it really depends on what kind of show you want to watch.

Would also recommend Sword Art Online. It's very simple to follow, has some absolutely gorgeous animation. It's got it's issues, no doubt. Typical anime stuff like a self insert mary sue hero with a harem but I have a soft spot for it due it being the first anime I ever watched and being a gamer myself, the idea of being stuck in a fantasy game was alluring. If you can forgive it's faults, it's very enjoyable.

People here are recommending some really good shows, but I will suggest something completely different: If you like Mystery and Crime-ish shows e.g. True Detective watch Monster.

It's hard to give you a recommandation if you don't tell us what you are interested in. I personally would recommend. Planetes if you like Hard science fiction and/or philosophy. This show isn't as much about showcasing cool technology and space fights as it is questioning the nature of our future existence in space, and how much the world will really improve.

Cowboy Bebop was my gateway. I think it has western sensibilities so it was a little easier to digest. Ghost in the Shell was another of my early favorites.

There's already been quite a few comments recommending Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood.

I totally agree with this recommendation, however, I'd suggest watching the first Fullmetal Alchemist adaption from 2003 before Brotherhood.

The original 2003 adaption aired while the manga was still being written. This caused the anime to have to diverge from the mangas story around midway through it's runtime (much like HBO's Game of Thrones and GRRM's A Song of Ice and Fire).

The newer adaption, Brotherhood, adapts the original manga's story in full. There's one big catch though: it expects you to have seen the 2003 adaption. There's quite a lot of setup and character development done in the 2003 adaption (from the manga), which Brotherhood glances over. This causes some important scenes in Brotherhood (which were better adapted in the 2003 version) to loose much of their impact - including one specific scene which the series is otherwise quite well known for.

The 2003 adaptions alternate story and ending, while in my opinion worse than Brotherhood's, is also worth the watch. The series itself doesn't properly wrap things up though, so you have to watch it's sequel movie The Conqueror of Shamballa as well.
