I don't love the DRM. Having to use their app for purchased books is annoying. My understanding is that it's all pushed from the publishers and it's not something that bookshop.org can control, but it's still annoying.

I saw this news in my email today! I’m tentatively excited, though my interest hinges entirely on whether someone develops a de-DRM tool.

At present I buy most of my books from Kobo and strip the DRM. The only sales Amazon sees from me are books that I can’t get on Kobo. I’d love to make my buying hierarchy Bookshop > Kobo > Amazon.

The one weak spot in Kobo’s library for me is comics and graphic novels. There are a ton of titles they simply don’t have. Unfortunately, comics are also much harder to de-DRM when you get them from Amazon, so I simply ignore the ones I want for now and am hopeful a better solution will come up later.

This could potentially be that solution for me. If Bookshop offers a broad library of comics, and I can use a tool to make the files my own, then they’ll see a lot of business from me.

Each one requires a physical ereader in that ecosystem. I download the books I buy to their respective devices, plug them in to my computer, and then use the plugins to make DRM-free copies.

There’s also a command line tool called knock that gets taken down from GitHub constantly, but there are mirrors in various places. That doesn’t require any Adobe accounts or devices to work.

Oh this is great!! I've been reluctantly buying a few ebooks from Amazon... I've pivoted to borrowing from my library a lot, and I have a Kobo now. But it's nice to buy ebooks also, very glad to...

This is great. I hope they do follow through on their own hardware. I have a kobo but i would use bookshop to support local stores .

Love this! I have a Kindle because of the ease of use + the current pile of ebooks I've bought over the years from Amazon. I've bought some print books from Bookshop before, hoping they end up with less DRM over time so the ebooks can be used elsewhere. I don't like reading on apps on my phone for books, it's too harsh on my eyes.

I've been using Amazon, but seems it's time to branch out and see the other offers. Does bookshop.org or Kobo have better library organization than Kindle's craptastic collections?
