... Moving forward, both sources believe comics will be just a small part of the necessary intellectual property maintenance needed to keep corporate cash cows like Batman, Wonder Woman, and Superman humming along.

Their projects get too much studio interference. Movies are announced but don't get materialized. Nightwing movie is going nowhere. No plans for MoS2. Comics are where DC excels over Marvel, both have copied from each other but most big ideas that changed the industry came from DC. Be it massive crossovers, superhero teams, multiverse, superhero deaths (temporary), even Thanos was inspired from Metron and Darkseid. Hopefully Warner gets some sense.
I don't think it's so much as a freedom problem since Zach Snyder was free to dig his own grave on his "Batman Shrugged" saga, and Warner is promoting a director's cut of his last film as the lodestone to their streaming service. Similarly Joker was free to be it's own movie away from canon, and Suicide Squad was free to be a music video. There isn't a creative vision of the DCEU, and the lack of freedom is because no one up top knows what they want and defer to the talent, IMO.
No real argument that DC is doing better with comics now, they are killing it in YA graphic novels and the digital market, which is where the winds are blowing right now, their imprints and self contained stuff is appealing, and I was curious about how aging up the current Justice League and some of the younger generation taking over would affect their stories they could tell, if that's still in the cards. If DC only goes after the most selling books that would be a shame, but if it frees them up to go off on their own and do stuff less married to "what's the latest apocalypse that Earth Prime has to deal it," I think things will be okay.

Generation Five (G5) is no longer happening after Dan DiDo's exit and the pandemic. Some changes might still happen after Snyder's Death Metal but the bigger ones like replacing Bruce Wayne as initially planned are scrapped. DC has basically done the next bigger apocalypse with Scott Snyder and Bendis' runs whole year.

When Marvel debuted Captain America in 1940, a year before America entered the war officially, it met with negative response because of the cover (Captain America punching Hitler) but soon became massive popular after the pearl harbor incident . It set the precedent that Marvel wouldn't shy away from using real world controversial events in the comics. However after the war was over Captain America didn't have much to do, slowly he started to fade away. They struggled to remain relevant till Stan Lee came in picture. Marvel was able to use their real world to advantage, X-men, Fantastic 4, Spider-Man, their greatest superheroes created by Kirby and Stan Lee.
However, DC was one of the few to represent the war indirectly through their own universe. Superman was a symbol of hope, justice, and the American Way. In How Superman Would End This War, a special Look magazine exclusive, Siegel and Shuster explained “how Superman would end the war.” Superman flies Hitler and Stalin to a meeting of the League of Nations, leaving justice in the hands of a real world political institution. I like DC's version more as in real life one Superman or Captain America wouldn't have ended the war. People needed hope which Superman delivered.
DC had bigger clout in the Comic Code Authority and they used it for their dominance. New set of moral codes were introduced which favored DC. Words like crime, horror were banned on comic covers. Violence was to be avoided. DC was able to revamp their superheroes easily in all mediums (1966 Batman) but others were not that lucky.
In the movie and TV, DC was successful because they had full creative control which Marvel lacked. 1944's TV Captain America was a district attorney called Grant Gardner not Steve Rogers. It was success but the source material was butchered. (DC's Captain America came in 2004's Catwoman). The situation is reversed now that Marvel has full control and DC is struggling.
