Thanks for showing me a new Youtube channel to subscribe to. Overall I agree with all the points the video raises, but my comment is more meta: I really like that the video is short. There's been a trend on youtube with video essays about obscure subjects becoming really, really long, and most of the times when I watch a video that lasts for over 30 minutes, the extra time rarely serves to actually bring new points to the discussion and usually reiterates things previously stated. A lot of people making these videos are good writers, but miserable (text) editors.

Well finally got around to watching this and it was hilarious. I didn't know the districts were split up by economy, I guess the books go more into that? What a ridiculous system.

I've only read the books, but its been a while. The books do talk quite a bit about it at the start, mostly for explaining the theming of each contestant's costumes. I think there may have been a sort of idea that if any one district rebels, it wouldn't be able to survive by itself? It also comes off less contrived when being introduced to District 12, the coal producing region, first. A region based around extracting fossil fuels is pretty believable. Though looking at the list of districts, some seem particularly non-sensical. I'm not sure how 'transportation' can be centralized to the point of being an entire district.
