    I think of post-mortems as the engineering way to apologize: explain in great detail what went wrong and multiple changes you made to the system to make sure it never happens that way again.

    If you do all that, saying "I'm sorry" is almost superfluous.

      I think a big part of these public ones is about advertising to developers. The message is "hey, look, we're roblox, you might only know us as that app that your niece spends all her allowance on, but from this you can see that we have complex, interesting engineering problems, extensive systems, and a bunch of smart people working on them".

        Edit: posting something like this is also a demonstration that management isn't so bureaucratic, risk-adverse, or secretive that it's impossible to get permission to tell the truth in public about something negative. There are definitely other organizations that wouldn't allow it.

        (Though I'm sure it was edited for public consumption. You don't want to say anything too negative.)
