I admit that I have been put off by Drew DeVault for a long time, primarily because he puts forth his opinions in an aggressive and uncompromising manner. Looking over the titles of his posts from the past year, it does not look like this pattern has changed much.

Harassing people who use his software is a step too far, but I understand why he has a lot of public detractors. If you are constantly throwing punches at the world, don't be too surprised when it punches back.

that being said, I simply don't understand why anyone would go out of their way to personally attack him to his face. that's just ... not nice, and never called for. just don't use his software if you don't want to.

as far as harassing project maintainers on sourcehut, that's just beyond the pale imo.

I just realized that Tildes isn't quite as techy as it used to be. And with that being said, I realized that I've basically selected myself outside the world of mainstream programmers and software developers. My job shifted away from it, but I'm just finishing a degree on the topic. I plan on reentering the workplace some time in the near future, but right now I'm not looking forward to it because it seems that there are a lot of jerks in the tech world these days. I don't know if I've just become more sensitive, if they've become louder, or there are just more of them than there used to be.

If someone is bashing me for something I've made, I would be reasonably OK if it were users; most of them have no idea what it means to ask for the things they want, and so I can afford to have some patience to them. But if you are a programmer or software developer of any type who wants to complain about how my code works, you should know better. I'm not the one forcing you to use my software, and if there is someone forcing you then why aren't you complaining to them instead? If you think you can do better, by all means, make the better version; maybe I'll switch to using your code instead. Sometimes it's worth it to make your own version of a tool or library; that's just the world we live in. But I don't have the patience to take care of babies who want to complain, especially because they can't understand why I'm writing my code the way that I do; that's their fault, not mine.

Situations like this always get me cause, like, I know exactly why he comes under fire like that. He's very abrasive in his takes, and often full-on aggressive from the outset in his interactions with others when it's not at all called for. I do admire the passion behind all that, but it's rarely constructive when it gets turned outwards and often puts his own goals at risk. And it ends in a lot of burned bridges and bad vibes.

This backlash isn't unearned, so it really sucks that it's unwanted (hey, some people just enjoy lighting bridges on fire) and not understood. It's a tragic and unfortunately common story.

I don't think very abrasive takes on his blog deserves hate mail backlash against him or anyone using source hut. I can't speak to his interactions with others beyond the GNOME developers, but I believe he did drop that a while back and stopped using mastodon.

It sucks that he doesn't like hate mail directed at source hut users, rather than that he has, in your opinion, earned hate mail???

I don't think anyone deserves or earns hate mail, or plenty of the things that people feel encouraged to do on the net or in real life. But he is often a disruptive force with the way he approaches things, for example asking a project to remove a feature, opening his issue with a threat to IP ban users visiting his server that he detected to be using that feature. Even with everyone else on their best behavior, if you behave aggressively and disruptively people are going to distance themselves from you and that can certainly be earned.

Thanks for clarifying. This reads like a very different message to me than what you wrote earlier, but I had difficulties parsing that one.
