    The only thing I can think is "about damn time." I mean, I get why it never happened, but it also always seemed odd that there had to be a fork maintained for an obviously popular patch. Mad props to airblader maintaining it, as well, because they did such a great job with it.

      What's the story behind why it never happened? I used to use i3 as my daily driver but never got too into the weeds of it's development, beyond loosing myself in the configs. Were the gaps a significant enough feature to warrant a separate development, or was it something else?

        From what I remember it was ideological. The i3 people didn't like the idea of something being less than purely utilitarian. Most people use i3-gaps for aesthetic reasons.

    These days Sway is a more modern replacement for i3. I think the configs are means to be be compatible so it’s a super easy switch over.

      Yes, Sway is basically compatible with i3-gaps wherever possible. Been using it for years without issue.
