SO would be improved if they simply removed the “close” function. Closing a question doesn’t remove it, it simply blocks people from answering. So it doesn’t clean up the site or improve quality. It’s simply a slap in the face to the poster. Either delete the question because it’s in violation of the rules, or leave it open.

These days, ChatGPT has replaced stack overflow for me. I ask it the question and then verify it with the documentation. Reddit is good for opinionated questions.

I see a lot of people complaining about StackOverflow, but in the end I think people don't really understand what the point of SO is. It's not really for personal help (like Discord/IRC), it's for a problem everyone has, like a crowdsourced Q&A database. Honestly, the average person shouldn't be asking questions on SO.

In this case, see this reply: https://old.reddit.com/r/webdev/comments/116vvpp/saying_goodbye_to_stack_overflow/j9bjepo/

I think the biggest problem is that SO doesn't quite communicate to new users what it's for. Unfortunately, this is pretty tall ordeal, considering new users don't tend to read rules or guidelines.

Personally, I think a discussion like this would be better served with some numbers, or legitimate examples of the complaints that you are talking about. Without those, it just ends up having people talk around each other about the 'general vibes' they get from SO.
