From my understanding this isn't YouTube just taking down the videos, it's YouTube receiving a complaint about their videos. The company filing the report wants them to run ads for them to profit off of due to the alleged infringement, and since they're not agreeing, YouTube is privatizing the videos.

This seems to be a unique situation because they're taking a hit, yet YouTube can't put ads without them signing for it, so they're forcing them to either add the ads, or remove the videos.

Obviously YouTube is still at fault, I'm not defending them, but I don't believe this is just an attempt to force them to monetize their videos. Hopefully they can get this situated.

I don't know enough about it all to point blame, but I find it hard to believe a company in their position would do that, and wait until just now to do it, but it is possible.

Same exact situation as Reddit; they were just able to get away with it for longer. Youtube has been slowly ramping up monetization on the platform for years. In 2016 and 2017, there was a confusing storm of conflicts with Youtube, creators, and ad providers. Ad providers were starting to get pissed that ads were playing on videos with questionable content and/or copyright infringing content. This came to a head when the Wall Street Journal started aggressively reporting on specific cases of this issue, they went after Pewdiepie for pushing his luck in regards to hate speech on a couple occasions, and eventually most of his ad partners pulled out, and shows got cancelled. After PewDiePie, there was a major looming threat from ad providers, they were very trigger happy on pulling ads and Youtube got really worried. Youtube started to heavily enforce and revise community guidelines and made sweeping changes to monetization. This is why creators have been having trouble getting any monetization, Youtube is focusing on 100% pleasing ad providers, which of course has gone too far and now we see issues of channels hyperfocused on views and clicks rising to the top.

Long story short, just like Reddit, Youtube is tripping over itself trying to make the platform "advertiser-friendly", alienating the entire community that makes Youtube special in the process

Thank you for the detailed explanation. It's too bad there isn't a good alternative available for content makers at this point.

I really, really hope that there will be a tildes for YouTube, but the costs would be astronomic.
