Timasomo FAQ

What is Timasomo?

Timasomo is "Tildes' Make Something Month": a creative community challenge that takes place in the month of November. It was inspired by NaNoWriMo, the National Novel Writing Month. This is Timasomo’s third year running!

You can see the threads for previous Timasomos using the timasomo tag. Here are the final showcase threads from past years featuring participants' creative works:
Timasomo 2020 Showcase
Timasomo 2019 Showcase

What are the rules?

Timasomo is self-driven and its goals are self-selected. On November 1st, participants will commit to a creative project (or projects) that they plan to complete within the month of November. There is no restriction on the methods/products of creativity: writing, painting, code, food, photos, crafts, songs -- if it's creative expression for you, it works for Timasomo!

Though most will be participating individually, collaborations are welcome too!

What is the schedule?

Timasomo begins November 1st and ends November 30th. All creative output towards your goal(s) should be confined to this time. This week prior to the start of November is for planning, and there will be a few days at the beginning of December given to "finishing touches" before we have our final thread, which will be a showcase of all the completed works. Below are the dates that I will be posting weekly threads:

Monday, October 25, 2021: Announcement/Planning Thread
Monday, November 1, 2021: Roll Call Thread
Monday, November 8, 2021: Update Thread #1
Monday, November 15, 2021: Update Thread #2
Monday, November 22, 2021: Update Thread #3
Monday, November 29, 2021: Final Update Thread
Monday, December 6, 2021: Timasomo Showcase Thread

Can I participate?

Yes! Timasomo is open to anyone on Tildes! The greater Tildes community is also encouraged to participate in discussion threads even if you are not actively working towards a creative goal. This is meant to be an inclusive community event -- all are welcome! If you are interested in participating but do not have a Tildes login, please e-mail the invite request address here for an invite to the community.

This announcement is posted in ~tildes.
All Timasomo process threads will be hosted in ~creative.
The final Timasomo Showcase thread will be posted in ~talk.

If you wish to participate or follow the proceedings, please make sure you are subscribed to ~creative.
If you wish to view the showcase, please make sure you are subscribed to ~talk.

Do I have to share my creation(s) publicly?

Tildes is a privacy-respecting site, and you are not obligated to share your creation here if you do not want to. We'd still love to hear about it though, if you're willing to share process and details!

How do I enter?

Participants will formally announce their plans to enter into Timasomo on November 1st in the Roll Call thread posted in ~creative.

What if I have ideas for how to run the event?

Please share them here! I am facilitating the event, but I am completely open to feedback and suggestions to make this the best event possible. I want this to be Tildes' event, not kfwyre's!

I'm hoping to, in further weeks, tackle more serious or important topics, but this week's entry was a nice, slow, easy start back into the writing habit for me -- a bit of leisurely meandering before I attempt to up my pace to a jog.

Feel free to give any thoughts/feedback!

I really like your system, would be nice to incorporate JustWatch or other subscription aggregators to find out what is able to be consumed where. I was thinking about making a website like that for comics and manga, but a spreadsheet probably does 90% of what I would want to do.

It's only been a week and I'm already behind on my novel, compared to the pace that's required of NaNoWriMo. I'm only at ~9k out of 15k words. I forgot how much time it sucks away, and it doesn't help that I have a job and other responsibilities now.

I still haven't thought of a proper title, so I'm just referring to it as Battlemage for now. At the moment, it's a fantasy/comedy novel, involving the main character accidentally making breakthrough discoveries in the magical arts and using them to her advantage.

On the plus side, at least I thought of some vague sort of plot and some characters this time, compared to my previous NaNo attempts. The setting's already written out due to my worldbuilding hobby, so hopefully I'll be able to do some writing without going completely off the rails.

Now the main problem is that the next two weekends are going to be both long and busy, setting me back even further. Hopefully, I'll still find some time to get some writing in.

I made some progress. I had to do some repairs to the forge (which seems to need constant work) and seek out some gas which ate up quite a lot of the limited free time I had this week - but I did manage some design work, got some metal cut out, did some preliminary shaping and grinding too. So I have a knife blank which is about 65% done, and that's about as done as it can get on the grinder at this stage because the next job is to get things hot and start forging. I should have time to do some of that this week.

No pictures this year, I'm shooting video instead and I'll edit it all together at the end.

I'm in a bit of a bind with rooting the Go, Vbmeta isn't able to be flashed, and patching Magisk into the boot.img just gives it boot loop. Apparently I can get kernel panic logs in a console-ramoops folder, but because I can't access anything without flashing the original boot, I can't recover the logs without wiping them. XDA throughout some suggestions, and Magisk GitHub's robot threw out the issue because I printed the version incorrectly, so it's probably going to be a long month.

Very happy at how I managed to get out of a creative rut by forcing myself to finish this before the update thread. Hope everyone else is also making good progress with their goals <3

I got absolutely Jack shit done. Between work and class and editing a friend's script, I am absolutely swamped and feeling like a fool. Definitely overwhelmed this week, but I'm hoping to integrate 15-30min of knitting before bed to help ease in a little better abs to make at least some progress. But things are looking grim, my friends.

It's ok! As long as you can make even 5 minutes of progress, that's something to be proud of!

Only worked on the Tercel on Saturday and while it doesn't seem like a lot, what was done is a milestone. Boiled down to a single thing: The crossmember spacers are in!

Doing so involved removing the temporary spacers, measuring hole diameter, outer distance, inner distance, and then doing it all again to ensure that everything is just right before drilling the UHMWPE/aluminum bar sandwich that comprises the 2.25" spacers on my too-small-for-the-task benchtop drill press. Successfully done on the first try, which is good considering I have just enough material to do only screw up once.

With the spacers in I measured the steering rack and ordered the new bushings for it, probably won't be in by this weekend though and I'll be headed out to the boonies to get the only car that survived the fire at my friend's former house over to his new place, so likely will only have one day of work on the Tercel this weekend as well. I might be able to squeeze in getting the steering shaft lengthened during the week though, we shall see.

Just the one picture as there's really not much to see, you measure, math, measure again, math again, prep the stock, drill, flip, drill, test fit, then repeat for the other side and install them. Simple thing with a bunch of steps in between to make sure you don't screw up.

I have only had time to update my printer and rewrite some calibration files for it. I’m seeing some odd issues with melty overhangs that I haven’t fully diagnosed yet - I probably just need to slow down when bridging. I plan on scanning my hands this weekend, so I might be able to talk about that come the next update.

Happy to report everything printed correctly on the first attempt! Which I was hopeful of, none of the individual pieces are geometrically complex. Total print time was about 68 hours all combined. I also started sanding, which will take up the majority of the time.

I'm planning to buy an airbrush kit either this week or next, to do this model but also future projects. It's something I've thought about getting but hesitated because I wasn't sure if propmaking was something I was invested enough in to warrant getting more of the specialized tools. I'm feeling fairly confident now that I am. Now it's a matter of judging the expense and fitting it into my budget.

Definitely didn't get as much done as I would have liked. I ended up with ~6k words and was hoping for ~10k. It has been a really great distraction from work, but with work being hectic at the moment it still takes priority. I'm hoping to find more time to write this week.

It was fun diving into some of the unprocessed images I have from the trip to jog my memory on a few of the days I was unsure about. They're really fun, I'll post some with the next update.

I have started on my reading of the report so I can write about it, and I cleaned off my soap mold from the last batch so I can put new soap in there. Not as far along on anything as I hoped I might be, so of course I have come up with another idea that I want to see if I can maybe do before the month ends. I'll have to see how much I get done, given that my SO and I are working on expanding the enclosure for our guinea pigs, and my parents are coming to visit for the last week of the month. Some things probably won't get done, but hopefully that's my reddit browsing or working through my youtube backlog and not these projects!
