Timasomo 2021 Thread #4: Update Thread 3

It's the last full week to work on your projects! I'll post the final weekly update next Monday, and then you'll have Tuesday the 30th to finish up with the creation part or Timasomo. Do NOT worry about having everything perfect by the 30th -- a rough cut is enough! You will have the first week of December to polish, edit, configure, tweak, etc. and get your piece(s) ready for the Showcase, which will go up on Monday, December 6th.

Weekly Task

Update us on your progress so far. What did/didn't you get done this week? Anything go according to plan? Anything go off the rails? Any successes or struggles to share?

Next Steps

Continue creating!

Timasomo FAQ

What is Timasomo?

Timasomo is "Tildes' Make Something Month": a creative community challenge that takes place in the month of November. It was inspired by NaNoWriMo, the National Novel Writing Month. This is Timasomo’s third year running!

You can see the threads for previous Timasomos using the timasomo tag. Here are the final showcase threads from past years featuring participants' creative works:
Timasomo 2020 Showcase
Timasomo 2019 Showcase

What are the rules?

Timasomo is self-driven and its goals are self-selected. On November 1st, participants will commit to a creative project (or projects) that they plan to complete within the month of November. There is no restriction on the methods/products of creativity: writing, painting, code, food, photos, crafts, songs -- if it's creative expression for you, it works for Timasomo!

Though most will be participating individually, collaborations are welcome too!

What is the schedule?

Timasomo begins November 1st and ends November 30th. All creative output towards your goal(s) should be confined to this time. This week prior to the start of November is for planning, and there will be a few days at the beginning of December given to "finishing touches" before we have our final thread, which will be a showcase of all the completed works. Below are the dates that I will be posting weekly threads:

Monday, October 25, 2021: Announcement/Planning Thread
Monday, November 1, 2021: Roll Call Thread
Monday, November 8, 2021: Update Thread #1
Monday, November 15, 2021: Update Thread #2
Monday, November 22, 2021: Update Thread #3
Monday, November 29, 2021: Final Update Thread
Monday, December 6, 2021: Timasomo Showcase Thread

Can I participate?

Yes! Timasomo is open to anyone on Tildes! The greater Tildes community is also encouraged to participate in discussion threads even if you are not actively working towards a creative goal. This is meant to be an inclusive community event -- all are welcome! If you are interested in participating but do not have a Tildes login, please e-mail the invite request address here for an invite to the community.

This announcement is posted in ~tildes.
All Timasomo process threads will be hosted in ~creative.
The final Timasomo Showcase thread will be posted in ~talk.

If you wish to participate or follow the proceedings, please make sure you are subscribed to ~creative.
If you wish to view the showcase, please make sure you are subscribed to ~talk.

Do I have to share my creation(s) publicly?

Tildes is a privacy-respecting site, and you are not obligated to share your creation here if you do not want to. We'd still love to hear about it though, if you're willing to share process and details!

How do I enter?

Participants will formally announce their plans to enter into Timasomo on November 1st in the Roll Call thread posted in ~creative.

What if I have ideas for how to run the event?

Please share them here! I am facilitating the event, but I am completely open to feedback and suggestions to make this the best event possible. I want this to be Tildes' event, not kfwyre's!

I only wrote an extra 4k words in the past week. Too many things are popping in all at once in my life. I'd have to average over 2000 words an hour based on an optimistic view of my free time until the end of the month, so I'm just cutting it off right now so that I can breathe a bit.

Sorry to hear that you're having to stop, but I'm glad you made an effort anyway! Hope you can enjoy some much needed rest and relaxation as a respite from what you've got going on right now.

I am very, very slowly making my way through rows. Each stitch is a wonder, but lace is fucking slow as hell. It's miserable, I'm not eve 1/6th of the way there, but it's so fulfilling at the same time? You get to see almost immediately the pattern you're working and it's so lovely. Like wow, this is turning out nice! And I'm sure it'll be lovely by the end of it, but I'm like aaaaaaaah I need to finish it at the same time.

I did make some progress this last week. I got the first sanding and the first coat of primer/filler applied even though the weather wasn't ideal. (ideally 50F or higher, but it's freezing temps outside, and I spray in my garage)

Got started on the second sanding pass, and it's coming out great so far. I haven't gotten into the smaller decorative pieces, those will be a bit more fiddly to get sanded and smoothed the way I want.

This week I have the entire week off due to US Thanksgiving, so I should be able to get quite a bit done. Today I couldn't do anything because there's a crew putting in all the replacement tile in my kitchen, which blocks access to the basement while the mortar is setting up (were my workbench is).

No progress on the Tercel project. Saturday was the rescheduled move of friend's car (and parts/tools/surviving equipment) from old house to new. Which went well. He's decided on another direction for one of his projects so the engine I pulled out of a previous car that was going to go into his truck is now headed back to me once my workshop is built. On that subject, heard from the builder yesterday, and we're 2-4 weeks out from the build date, getting excited now!

Sunday was spent with my wife going to Preserve Halloween Festival, picked up some artwork and handmade clothing.

Should be a better update with this long weekend ahead. Likely mostly rust conversion and paint.

Ugh, disaster. I was busy with other stuff for a couple of days, then my kid was sent home ill so I was looking after him, then he gave me his illness so I lost a couple of days to that. Nothing achieved on the knife front since last week.

On the other hand I did get two solid days of hanging out with my kid, which was nice. Followed by being ill, which was not. Wasn't covid at least, just good old fashioned norovirus.

I've got a tonne of wood arriving tomorrow so I'm going to lose tomorrow moving that, but hopefully I can really put in some time weds/thurs/friday, otherwise there's no chance I'm finishing. I might have to cut a few corners even then.

Like many others, I've been busy, so progress hasn't been what I want it to. I originally set out to do at least a post a week, but my current project on trying to meaningfully tackle grades as a big, deep topic isn't the kind of thing I can release serially. I need to write and edit all the parts before I can push them out, so I'm currently in progress on that. Not gonna lie though, I'm going to be scrambling with some deadline writing at the beginning of next week, as I've backburnered it more than I should.

I managed to at least start making the game last week. I didn't do too much, but I think I got pretty much all the scaffolding needed to make the game. I have chosen Godot as the engine for the game, which I previously used for one Ludum Dare game. Also I have decided to make the game using a very simplistic art style, partly cause it looks cool to me and partly cause it will save me a lot of time and allow me to make more stuff.

I probably wont get too too much more done over the next week, so it will be a very minimalist game, but it will be a game. Also, today I spent about an hour jamming on guitar, and recorded a part of it which I will use as music for the game. I kind of like having such impromptu low effort music in my games. Even if I try hard to make good music I am not sure I like it that much more than when I just randomly record me doing random stuff.

I'm a bit late to update this week but I was able to wrap up two tracks that were on the backburner for far too long. While it wasn't as 'productive' as finishing two tracks from scratch, it's still nice to witness a burgeoning discography even if it's just for my own pleasure :)
I hope everyone here is having a lovely Thanksgiving break!

Oh hey, I didn't realize these threads were happening over in ~creative. I've been working on my project much more slowly that I was hoping, but had a burst of productivity today and hopefully will be able to finish on time. But I'm not sure if it'll work or not. Either way I'm excited to find out
