Everything is under existential threat these days. We as a species simply do not give a shit about any of it, not when there's money to be made. And that will never change. Technological miracles are our only hope anymore, nuclear fusion coming along to solve our energy problems, lab-grown meat becoming cheaper than farm meat, gene engineering and god knows what else to stop antibiotic resistance. Humanity is more than capable of solving all our problems with the tools we have on hand; hell, it could have solved them with the tools on hand in the 60's. We just don't give enough of a shit to solve any of it.
Everybody wants to change the world, but no one, no one wants to die.
Imagine spending years on research, lots of public funding going into this. To uncover some scientific basis to base judgement on. For it to only see nothing done with it. Harrowing.
