Too hot to work: climate change 'puts south-east Asia economies at risk' Again, the hardest-hit are going to be the low-income and the working poor, who are more likely to work in the open daylight without A/C. And we know how poverty and despair reinforce each other...

When I was in the military and we were over seas - We would be working in 115 degree weather all day every day. There were days so hot the asphalt melted parts of the soles of our boots. We had these locals who would work with us for the day. Those guys were tough. Other departments on the ship would be getting off work laughing at us and these guys. But those people worked damn hard all day every day sun up to sun down. So I really do feel for these people. Especially after working side by side with them.

By analyzing decades of historical data across thousands of cities or counties and attempting to control for other factors, they concluded that 1 ˚C increases in monthly average temperatures increase suicide rates by 0.7 percent in the United States and 2.1 percent in Mexico.
    .....
The driving mechanism isn’t certain, but the paper says one hypothesis is that high temperatures directly affect mental well-being “perhaps due to side effects of thermoregulation.” In other words, blood flow patterns in the brain could change as the body works to maintain its temperature within a certain range.

It was part of the research parameters:

We then assess how responses differ across decades, by income level, sex, population level, and both air conditioning and gun own-ership rates, as well as across regions with different long-run aver-age temperatures. As is common in the literature27,28, stratifications by income, air conditioning, time period and baseline temperature allow us to evaluate whether economic development or experi-ence with warmer conditions might help reduce excess suicides via adaptation—a common theory in the broader climate–health literature and a putative cause of observed differences in suicide seasonality across countries29, but one that has received little direct empirical scrutiny.

Thanks! I'm surprised it's controlled over so many variables and still presents this result. Definitely adds another layer to our world's climate issues.

This seems very click-baity and like an example of someone taking advantage of a correlation.

It's backed by a real study that looks pretty legit.
