I'm interested to see what they replace it with. Gas is often used to cover peaks in demand in addition to providing baseload. I guess they will look towards more solar power (wind probably not great in LA) and storage along with increased imports from other parts of California.

The consultants suggested they build three new gas plants to replace them but the city is hoping to head in the other direction. I heard about one part of an alternative scheme, a plan to convert the Hoover dam to a hydro battery that would pump water into the dam during the day and generate with it on cloudy days and at night.

at this rate, california is almost literally going to have to set the standards for the rest of america on this issue and then drag the rest of the country toward those standards singlehandedly.

They are such a clear leader beyond almost any other government I can think of and they even hosted a global climate summit last September that placed the state on par with major world governments.

i guess that's one of the perks of having an economy that rivals many countries despite only being a nation's first level political entity! i suspect the fairly loose nature of american states to the government (and the fact that the democrats run pretty much everything major in the state nowadays) has also really allowed california to set policies that would be difficult to make reality anywhere else in the world. after all, there's no need (or at least a lesser need) to worry about things like whether or not you're putting yourself at a strategic or economic disadvantage by making sweeping climate reforms when you're under someone else's national umbrella.
