I happened to attend a recent hearing in Annapolis, Maryland where the legislature was considering a bill to ban chlorpyrifos pesticides in the state. The evidence presented by former EPA officials, public health representatives, scientists, and environmental groups on how this chemical can impact childhood intelligence and other health benefits was absolutely staggering. I was really struck by the amount of folks continuing to defend the use of this chemical just because it may be a bit cheaper than alternatives. The fact that folks would rather save a few bucks despite the severe health impacts is such a gross example of the danger of capitalism left unchecked.

This is another tragedy that the Trump administration has wrought on this country. Their near-religious zeal to deregulate this country and support big business is having a significant impact on public health, not just in undoing this planned pesticide ban at the EPA, but through deregulating coal plant mercury emissions, undoing the Clean Power Plan, rewriting clean water regulations, rolling back car efficiency standards, and the list goes on.
