On a similar note, it's bizarre to see environmentalists pitched against animal lovers, but it surprisingly does happen. Here in New Zealand, we use a chemical called sodium fluoroacetate (commonly known as '1080') dropped as millions upon millions of pellets into our national parks to kill the introduced predators—rats, stoats, rabbits, hares, feral cats and dogs—that prey upon helpless native species that evolved with no defensive mechanisms at all because New Zealand was so isolated from the rest of the world's biology.

Yet, this culling mechanism has attracted the ire of many uninformed people who believe it poisons our waterways (1080 degrades quickly in the presence of water), and hunters dislike it because it kills their targets—deer, pigs, etc.

Then, our national rehoming shelter organization for cats & dogs, one I (used to) support, got involved for no reason and effectively stated they don't support the use of it because it kills animals, which yes, it does, that's kind of the point. But I don't understand the rationale behind an absolutist "never kill anything" policy over accepting the extinction of unique and endemic species in New Zealand. If anything, it's selfish.

formal complaint here [PDF warning]. when we last left off, denver was culling geese and using them as food for needy families so that the slaughter would not be wasteful, which has--no pun intended--naturally ruffled the feathers of animal rights activists. although they have several grounds, namely about the safety of goose meat and the fact that denver may or may not have the right to do this, i'm going to guess they won't be successful in their complaint here.
