I was frankly stunned at the estimate of the value of Brazil's illegal pesticide trade: $3 billion USD. The article doesn't provide the market value of the agricultural products the pesticides are being applied to, but annual export production is estimated at $107 billion USD in 2018. About half of Brazil's food exports wind up in China again.

The other piece the article doesn't delve into is the Chinese export of chemicals to destinations where they're illegal. That speaks to inadequate law enforcement and corruption on both sides of the trade.

As noted here, the Bolsonaro administration has been acting to repeal bans, approve new chemicals, and weaken enforcement.
