I think all of those concerns are far greater than this current disease. I really hope the over-representation of COVID-19 in media doesn't detract from the visibility of those issues.

Don't worry, "Trump reacts to the Media reacting to Trump," is what's taking all their attention right now and I don't see that changing in the future.

Keyword: popular. I think there are great journalists out there putting out great work, but what becomes popular is what can be scandalized/hot-take'd/lampooned/argued-with-strawpeople. Trump, of course, makes that all too easy. So does disaster news.

The Atlantic has good coverage that's not too Trump-centric, particularly Ed Yong in the science section. I am fairly disappointed in the front page of The Washington Post, but I guess it's understandable considering that they are in Washington. Similarly for Politico, that's their beat.

Used to subscribe to The Atlantic! Probably ought to, again. As well as some other "slow" news periodicals.

They're not particularly slow these days if you read them online, but they do have a lot of longer articles.

I absolutely agree, this is why this is probably the first Trump tweet I have actually taken seriously enough to post to this site (although admittedly I should have probably posted it in...

The business, political and geopolitical mischief possible with manipulated data, audio or video is almost limitless; think manufactured video of Jeff Bezos—whose personal life has already apparently been the target of sophisticated adversaries and extortion plots—using a racial slur; grainy fake video or audio of Joe Biden admitting to assaulting Tara Reade; grainy video of Trump saying he plans to nuke Iran in one hour; or even Anthony Fauci saying that he’s doctoring the Covid death tolls. Given the persistence of conspiracy theories, and the fact that they now have a megaphone in the White House, it’s easy to imagine that certain lies, once let out of the genie’s bottle, will never fully be stopped.

I absolutely agree, this is why this is probably the first Trump tweet I have actually taken seriously enough to post to this site (although admittedly I should have probably posted it in isolation, rather than with an article with a bunch of other tweets). When the lies are not only, written, heard and broadcasted by propagandists but created to seem like they're coming directly from the supposed enemy's mouth is, (despite everything that has already happened to the media in the last 50+years), a completely precedent-breaking move. Today it's Joe Biden looking tongue-y, tomorrow it's footage of Tara Reade being raped. I really hope old age has the better of them when it comes to this type of technology.

It seems weird to me. You'd think by now people would pay more attention to provenance. If you don't know where it's from and trust the author to be straight about it, it could easily be fake. How many times do people need to be fooled before they learn this?

But then, the only videos I watch are music videos.
