I lived on a fire lookout with my parents during several of my childhood summers. Some of my family members still man the lookouts. It's unfortunately kind of a hard job to land these days because it's in high demand and there are fewer and fewer lookout towers remaining, which is a real shame.

The feeling of living by yourself on top of a mountain is something that's hard to describe. It's not hard to see why so many ancient beliefs included the idea of going up to a mountain top to approach the divine.

This feels weirdly familiar due to the 2016 game Firewatch. There it was mostly an interesting background setting. Thinking about it as a real-life experience, weeks and months on end in total isolation in the middle of nature is really something else.

I think I'd love doing it for a week. It must be a beautiful work place. I don't even know how I'd deal with longer isolation. I don't need too many people around me but this sure would test my limits.

I'm also surprised this is still a job that exists.
