The first ships carrying Chinese goods with 145% tariffs are arriving in Los Angeles. Shipments are down.

Great article thank you for sharing. It's nice to see a first hand account from an affected industry with some tangible numbers as opposed to the primarily theoretical economist opinions we've seen to date. I feel for those dockworkers. Once this hits retailers, we'll probably be inundated with similar articles.

Did anybody else stock up on anything before May? Tea (specifically oolong and white tea from Taiwan and China) has become a huge part of my daily life and I've accumulated about $400-500 of tea in the last couple months. I feel a little insane for doing it but I just hated the idea of going without something I loved because of geopolitical idiocy. Part of me still feels like this is some kind of bluff that'll get pulled back but if that's the case I wouldn't think they'd actually start implementing it.

I haven't but I am somewhat interested in understanding the mindset of doing it. Reminds me of stockpiling toilet paper during the COVID period. For me, I just buy less of 'x' item if I can, and if it's a want item, then probably I will do without. However in an emergency, or otherwise need then this will be hitting hard. I expect 3rd and 4th Qtr of this year to be gloomy even if a "deal" is negotiated. When I was in school (many moons ago!) I recall watching folks who grew up in the 20's and how they just carried on in the face of a lot of economic challenges. Never thought that I may actually have to live it, but here we are, this is what Americans voted for, f'ing unbelievable!

Your mindset is refreshing and one I should channel more. Ultimately I'll survive without my comforts as many have done and continue to do in this world. I should also admit that an excuse to order more tea was very welcome in my life.

Agree that we're going to start seeing impacts in the coming months and who knows what the "it" commodity will be. Maybe not toilet paper this time since I believe most is produced domestically or in Canada (sigh). Ultimately we really just can't predict and should be ready to endure whatever challenges lie ahead.

However, my partner is fairly reliant on clothing from L.L.Bean (he is 6'6, and it's the only shop we've found that reliably sells shirts and pants that fit his arms and legs), so we stocked up right after "Liberation Day".

I think these tariffs have also upsides that I think numerous people don't see or simply are not aware of it.

All the small shipments and the fast fashion industry you can order now also are affected by that. And I genuinely think that it isn't sustainable that you can order stickers or very cheap clothes from Shein or Temu.

Because me personally I know at least a few people that order like stuff from Temu or AliExpress where I am just asking myself why?
Like yes it sucks especially if you want to order "legitimate" stuff like tea for example (thanks TommyTenToes ).

But who am I to say what is legitimate or right or wrong.

I think that's more because of the "de minimis exemption" being removed rather than the overall tariffs.
