Can we get a ~finance group?

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but there's no good fit for topics ranging from personal finance, investing, portfolio management, budgeting, running a business, markets, etc. Seems ~finance or similar could be a catch-all for a massive category of topics that don't have a place currently.

~lifestyle could probably take the posts for now. Maybe make it a sub group in the future? Not sure the best place in the end. But I really don't want it to turn into the type of place PF is on...

But I really don't want it to turn into the type of place PF is on Reddit. That community can be really toxic. PF on Tildes should be more empathetic and understand life happens.

A good example is that some guy ran into some bad luck and had his savings had been wiped out. He was $40 short of being able to afford something that would have saved him $200. He posted about how an unforseen event happened and wiped out his savings and he had to dip into his HSA to be able to pay some bills. He was asking about budget and people just crapped all over him.

He was asking for advice on budgeting nad getting the taxes paid. Someone actually said to this guy, "You fucked up. If you had udnerstood that withdrawing from your HSA had tax penalties you wouldn't be in this mess!" That was the answer that person gave.. And I am thinking, But this guy didn't have a choice. It wasn't that he didn't understand there would be penalties. It was that he didn't have a choice and had to suffer the penalties to make ends meet. Understanding exactly how something works doesn't mean you don't have to make a choice in the end..

And people just kept piling on and about how this guy was irresponsible and saying, "If you had a 3-5 month emergency fund you wouldn't be in this mess!" And in the OP he had mentioned he had an emergency fund in a savings account and it was wiped out due to the event. But people kept ignoring that stuff. Basically saying, "Well, if you had a million dollars you wouldn't be in this mess! This is due to your own irresponsible life choices!" And no one even knew what happened to the guy. Someone could have burned his house down for all they knew..

And so many people were commenting in this real condescending way and you could totally see it, but they did it in a way they could spin it later. OP would respond kindly and say they didn't need to be condescending. And then all these people would dump on OP. They aren't being condescending! They are trying to help! But they weren't trying to help.

People were acting mad that they were answering. They were acting like someone was forcing them to answer and OP got frustrated and after nothing but being kind about everything he said, "Look. No one made you answer. I don't understand why you are so mad by the fact you're here answering." And everyone lit into him. "How dare you say that! They did answer and it was a good answer!" And the answer was something along the lines of, "Sounds like you didn't have any saving set aside for an emergency. Try doing that next time."

Luckily I can already tell Tildes will become a place that Reddit is not. So far everyone I have communicated with are extremely understanding and I think everyone knows that sometimes in life you just get dealt a bad hand. I have faith that this community will not berate other users who find themselves in a tough spot and instead will give constructive and positive advice on how to get out of said tough spot.

The ratio of people who think this way will probably diminish once the userbase becomes large enough, unfortunately.

I can agree, in the meanwhile I think ~lifestyle could fit tags "personal finance" and the like. At the end, managing finance is what more affect someone's lifestyle.

Yeah, "high level" finance probably would have to find some space in ~talks or ~misc right now even if it's definitely quite a specialized topic. Maybe it could be more fitting in ~news actually,...

Yeah, "high level" finance probably would have to find some space in ~talks or ~misc right now even if it's definitely quite a specialized topic.

Maybe it could be more fitting in ~news actually, depending on what is linked/discussed. It would definitely make for more "active" topics compared to news of "events" to which you can't really add much apart from being happy or sad they happened.
