The only issue I have is the final cost of the whole affair. $30k? He bought a house (and a second "crappiest, cheapest" one) and a car (and a bike? Can't tell if he replaced the bike), and it's just $30k? Is my estimation of the value of the USD that much off? I researched housing in the US once. Nothing thorough. The figure I got around was $40 for the house alone (can't remember where).

I think that was the "net" cost. He sold a lotus and a motorcycle, both probably netted a decent amount of money. Assuming he went with a modest house in a somewhat rural area, it makes sense.

Additionally, did he not also sell the house he was in? I think that's implied here:

Mr. Lopp’s old house was inextricably tied to him, so he and his dog needed a new one.

I "love" when articles describe the cost of things like this. "It only costs $30K." But they mean, "It only costs $30K and a house and several expensive vehicles, and generally already being rich."
