    Unsurprising. The rise of alternative streaming services means several things:

    • Netflix losing licenses to various shows which drew/kept certain viewers;
    • A portion of viewers no longer have the necessary entertainment budget available to spend on Netflix as they spend it on other services;
    • A portion of viewers overwhelmed with the amount of competing services end up resorting to piracy, as it becomes the more convenient option again.

    There's excellent Plex servers for <$10/month, which give access to tens of thousands of shows and movies, with the guarantee that anything remotely popular is part of that offering. Or, for the more legal option, you can pay hundreds of dollars a month to access content spread between 5-10 different apps, with stupid limitations such as "no offline viewing" or "check in home every n days", not to mention the incompatibilities due to DRM etc.

      I mostly agree. I still have Hulu and Netflix accounts despite having access to a plex server with every show or movie I could imagine on it (parents use them and don’t want to use plex). The one thing I’ll give Netflix and Hulu is that they do a good job of adding new stuff and making suggestions. Maybe it’s just the server I use but there isn’t any way other than scrolling through the whole library to find shows/movies. I go to plex when I have something I want to watch, but when I’m trying to find something to watch I usually go to Hulu or Netflix.

      So how does Plex work for that exactly? I thought it was just setting up a private media server for your own files? Can you can get a paid subscription to private servers that will stream stuff or do you have to download off those servers and save locally? What about platform exclusives like Stranger Things?

          Plex isn't open-source. If you want something like Plex that is open-source, Jellyfin is a good alternative.

      Yeah, the Netflix interface is truly awful... which is why when I am hunting for something to watch on Netflix, I don't actually go to the site itself, I use the unofficial Netflix online Global Search (uNoGS).

      p.s. Set "Audio: Japanese" in uNoGS to avoid showing results with only dubs available.

          Yeah, it's unfortunate but ever since Netflix shut down their public API the genres have been pretty unreliable on uNoGS. They're alright for the "All <top-level genre>", even though they have some issues like you pointed out, but especially once you start going into the sub-genres the results get incredibly sparse even though they shouldn't be. So I generally just use it to search the top-level genres, restricted by date ranges and IMDB score, then sort by TomatoRating. It's far from perfect, but it's the best I have found so far and still much better than hunting for something to watch via the abysmal Netflix interface IMO.
