This is one of the main reasons why my wife quit her job in a non-profit. The pay sucked and everyday was crazy, but having her loans paid off was a huge perk. When none of her payments qualified after years of sacrifice, that crushed her. Every time she tried talking to someone, she would get different answers. It's sickening how deceitful these programs are.

As someone who will be graduating high school soon. I’ll have to start worrying about how I’m going to pay for college. It’s too bad to see programs like this that would be great (especially when considering a teaching career), just to find out how deceitful they are.

My advice would be to not overlook community college for the first 2 years, especially if you don't know exactly what you want a degree in yet. I knew exactly what I wanted to do from an early age (Computer Science) and once I graduated high school I went to the local community college for 3 years (should have been 2 but I went less than full time due to working full time, which I also recommend if possible, actually paid each semester in cash so no debt). I decided state college would be good enough for my degree, unless you are going to an Ivy League I'm not sure how much which school you went to matters much.

Also make sure classes you take at community college transfer where you want to go, since I already knew where I was going the school was able to give me a list of classes that transferred without issue to the state college and even broke out what I should be taking each semester.

I went to a state university right after high school and had several gen ed professors that taught the same exact course at the community college down the road for a fraction of the price.

My wife and I are going through this now. The system is so broken that we can never get straight answers from anyone.

The only payment method that the federal government says qualifies for debt forgiveness after 10 years is income based and (even though we don’t make a lot of money), it would cost her $300 per month. That pays off her loans in...9 years. And none of her payments before switching to income based repayment would count toward that 10 years of payment that’s required before forgiveness.

    It’s kind of a joke.

Honestly that kind of enrages me. Like it seems they purposely made it confusing so that people would get rejected and still have to pay for their loans. And people wonder why I still study as an engineer instead of something better suited to my interested, because evil people like them are holding the reins.
