Talk about hypocrisy! Back during the Global Financial Crisis of 2007/8, the Labor federal government gave everyone $950 cash payments to stimulate the economy (and it worked - we were the only OECD country to avoid a recession). However, the Liberal Party gave them so much shit for just handing out free cash. They were still criticising Labor for this as recently as last year. A decade later, here they are doing exactly the same thing for pretty much the same reasons.
Stimulus payments like this are a good thing in these circumstances. But the Liberal Party is showing real hypocrisy right now.
Considering that the Labor governement's treasurer won an international award for the way the 2008 crisis was handled in Australia it makes sense to attempt and copy it now. But it really drives home how the last decade or so of Liberal slogans about "Labor's reckless spending" have been absolute hogwash. They knew it was good policy and they misled the public to get into office.
just curious is that what this 'presidential' announcement is about in a few minutes?
I highly doubt that the American President is going to talk about this Australian stimulus package which was announced only an hour ago.
It's easy to get confused when the title leads with "The Federal Government", I guess. I did initially until I continued reading the title—even though I'm not an American myself, the world is very much a U.S.-centric place so sometimes clarification can be handy.
Suggest alteration to: "The Australian Federal Government".
I considered adding "Australian" in "The Australian Federal Government", but I thought the mention of Australians later in the title was sufficient.
I resent that I have to specify "Australian" when similar posts about the USA do not have to specify "American". Almost none of the recent news posts about American politics have to say they're about the USA. We're all expected to just know that.
This title includes the word "Australian" and the post is tagged "Australia". If people can't work out this is about Australia, I'm not responsible.
Maybe people need to learn that Tildes is not just about the USA, by having their assumptions challenged occasionally.
Let someone else change the title.
I can't speak for everyone with title editing, but I have absolutely no intention to... since US-centrism on social media kinda irks me too. :P
