I know so many people who, due to this arbitrary restriction, are not going to see any benefit from this at all. It's very annoying. I'm not surprised though, that Congress managed to fuck this up...

In fact, people who can be claimed as a dependent, even if they are not, are not eligible for a payment, Janet Holtzblatt, senior fellow at the Urban-Brookings Tax Policy Center, tells CNBC Make It in an email.

“A taxpayer is allowed to claim a full-time student between the ages of 19 and 24 as a dependent, so the parent will not get $500 for a college student, nor can the college student generally claim $1,200,” says Holtzblatt. The parent will still receive their $1,200 check, if eligible.

Experts predict that coronavirus will have profound impacts on the financial futures of young Americans. Not only are some left out of receiving stimulus relief checks, but young people, ages 16 to 24, will also be disproportionately affected by coronavirus layoffs, according to the Pew Research Center, since nearly half work in service-sector jobs, and make up 24% of workers in higher-risk industries overall.

I know so many people who, due to this arbitrary restriction, are not going to see any benefit from this at all. It's very annoying.

I'm not surprised though, that Congress managed to fuck this up for literally millions of people.

Clearly, even in an unprecedented global pandemic, giving people money is just too socialist for the United States.

It's still far too little even for those that do qualify. We need to give people a monthly check until they're able to go back to work.

Isn't that what the expanded unemployment insurance is for? The bill extended it to 100% of your salary for 4 months.

Oh, that's pretty good then. How much would that normally be? Is there a cap?

I'm on SSI and my mother files me as a dependent, she'll get the extra 500 but I don't think I'm seeing anything because the only taxes I pay are sales tax.

Are you younger than 17? If not, your mother will not receive $500 by claiming you as a dependent.
