I recently had the good fortune of attending a dinner with Sam Sifton, during which we chatted about various NYT and cooking topics. He had previously talked about the innovation of having thousands of recipes available at the user's fingertips via NYT Cooking. He wondered how they could balance that with the feel of having a tangible object — Grandma's 3-ring binder of recipes; a sauce-splattered, newspaper-clipped recipe attached to an index card; or even a dog-eared published cookbook — and all the sentimental connotations they carry.

I suggested to him that the giant repository of recipes in the NYT Cooking database would act as a great base for users to organize and then print their own cookbooks on-demand. It even allows people to import their own recipes into the NYT database via the Recipe Box and web clipper functionality. I thought this would be a great way to leverage existing functionality to balance out the intangible depth of the web app with the tangible sentimentality of a physical thing.

Sam gave me a knowing look, a shrug of his shoulders, and agreed that it would be great to (paraphrased) "allow people to recreate the experience of the family 3-ring binder".

Only one week later, here we are! I guess he couldn't spill the beans that this was in development. I'm excited to give it a try.

I am also really excited to give it a try, I have loads of their recipes that I have saved over time so it will be cool to get some of them in book form.
