If you can't hear, you can't hold a conversation. Less talky talky, more eaty eaty drinky drinky get out so the next eaty drinky cycle can begin.

I've certainly been in loud places when it's not been busy and you can tell they're taking their sweet time with the bill.

I used to think about it a lot. Trendier places would always have the music turned way up, I wondered if it was to invoke the sense of being in a club for younger diners? Or maybe there's some pyschology that by leaning in and focusing on what the person is saying we feel closer to them and therefore have a better time?

It's damn annoying. Especially with a group larger than four when you can't hold a conversation with more than one other person at a time. If you're sat next to 'that guy/girl' then you're screwed.
