I had foie gras at a Michelin starred restaurant in Italy, and honestly it was not even that much to write home about. I had avoided it before that restaurant due to the extreme cruelty of the process of making it, and I kind of wish I had kept up my streak because it was completely not impressive.

I realize that the meat industry as a whole is a pretty cruel enterprise and it seems silly to single out one facet of that. I've been really reflecting on my meat consumption recently and trying to cut out as much as possible. It's not perfect, but I definitely eat much less than I used to. However, I recognize that many people rely on some form of meat to have a balanced diet (yes, it is possible to replace meat but that's a bit beside the point). No one relies on foie gras, so I don't see a reason it should be allowed and see many reasons it shouldn't. Extreme animal cruelty doesn't suddenly become less extreme because it makes a tasty treat at the end.

The Guardian published a couple of interesting pieces several years ago on the industry and one farmer's attempts to make the product ethically:

It sounds like this Danish group are coming down on the side of it being inherently unethical regardless of production technique, but that wasn't made 100% explicit in the article.
