The chicken “depopulation,” as the organization calls it, will be conducted humanely under guidelines issued during avian flu outbreaks, The Baltimore Sun reported.

I love the double speak of the meat industry. It's so messed up that we've turned beings that can suffer into a commodity, and that we pretend there is any possible way such a thing could ever be humane. Let alone killing 2 million creatures for nothing other than some cost savings.

From the article: Alternate headline from the Telegraph: 2 million chickens to be killed because there aren’t enough workers to kill them

    From the article:

Nearly 2 million chickens at farms in Maryland and Delaware will be destroyed instead of processed for meat, a result of coronavirus-related staffing shortages at processing plants.

“With reduced staffing, many plants are not able to harvest chickens at the pace they planned for when placing those chicks in chicken houses several weeks ago," before social distancing measures took effect, a trade group for the Delmarva poultry industry said in a statement.
