Got the spouse a basic Cuisinart ice cream maker for Buymas this year. His first excursion was turmeric/ginger ice cream, with crystallized ginger chunks. Not bad, but I can't say I'm excited at exotic flavors just for the sake of trying stuff. He's now muttering about the use of porcini powder and suchlike.

There are some better known and tested non-Western flavors I'm planning to try, and the strawberry/gochujang sounds like a winner.

I can absolutely empathise with Tom for ice cream #3. The first time I tasted that, the taste stayed in my mouth for hours and I just had a SPECK of it. All I could think about for two days...

I’m pretty sure those who claim they like it are trolling people with that. You know the cartoon barrels of radioactive waste in the simpsons and such? That’s the flavour right there.

I personally like marmite. It's in that great constellation of strong, funky flavors along with fish sauce, garum, miso, and other fermented liquids and pastes. It's definitely something to be used in very small quantities, though, and I think the idea of marbling it into ice cream was ill-planned. It should have been far more interspersed, and combined with some other flavor for best effect. It's not an ingredient, it's a seasoning.

It seemed like Barry was an excellent sport in a situation with very weird flavors, but it didn't seem like he was having that much fun with the situation.
