Posted earlier that Tetris 99 might be a good candidate for a competitive eSport circuit, considering that it's already an easy game to view, explain and follow. I wouldn't know if a traditional caster would follow a player until they tap out, but a sort of Redzone-like "spectate where the action is happening" mode would be pretty wild to see.
There's already the Classic Tetris World Cup, where they play for points on NES, but a more modern, 7-bag (every set of seven pieces gives you all seven pieces), garbage-included multiplayer mode...

I'm personally tired of making every game about eSports. I don't know why everything needs to have tournaments now. For some games it makes sense but for others it takes the fun out of just playing the game and seeing what the community naturally comes up with.
Furthermore I don't think Tetris has deep enough gameplay mecanics to warrant commentary. It would just get repetitive fast as every good player will tend to have the same approach to what is optimal.
Just let the game live on its own. With Youtube and Twitch, there will be organic and genuine wild moments.
That sounds positively stressful. The Verge claims that Tetris 99 is "the opposite" of Tetris Effect, which just reminded me that the latter exists and I've been meaning to pick it up. Hard pass...

Tetris normally feels stressful when things start speeding up. Tetris 99 actually makes me feel more accomplished because it constantly shows me that I did better than some number of people.

I dont think it's that bad, and I'm bad enough I generally stopped playing multiplayer stuff. It feels like tetris with random garbage, plus the fun that other people are throwing the garbage at you.

(personal problem incoming) The only issue I have with the game is not being able to remap the controls. I played a lot of Tetris in my formative years that didn't use the original control scheme...

The only issue I have with the game is not being able to remap the controls. I played a lot of Tetris in my formative years that didn't use the original control scheme (namely up to instant drop, instead it was just a button on the keyboard). So, long story short, I've played around 10 matches or so where I've just lost by mixing up the controls. I'm sure I could get used to it if I really put in the effort, though. Other than that, it's a lot more fun than I'd expected it to be.
A neat addition to it would be introducing three man squads (in a 3v3v3v... mode). It'd let friends play with each other and develop strategies together.
Agreed; the principal issue with the game, to me, are the controls. I end up accidentally quick-dropping at least once per game, and would really love to have bound it to one of the shoulder...

It should be more difficult to accidentally quick-drop on joycons where the d-pad is four distinct buttons, but those things just aren't quite as comfortable as a pro controller.
I think this is the push that I needed to get Nintendo Switch Online. I'm glad they're adding games that are somewhat valuable, as opposed to NES games that can be played on many other consoles,...

I'm quite addicted to it. Getting into matches is quick and easy. Great fun and it came with the Nintendo Online subscription.

I forgot about vitetris, but garbage has been a thing as long as there's been multiplayer Tetris, if I remember correctly.
