Late reply, but I just watched this video last night, actually, and wound up setting up Dwarf Fortress (using LazyNewbPack because I wanted to use a graphics pack. I can work with ASCII games, but generally prefer not to). From his description, there's a beauty to the way the game unfolds, and I've decided I want to witness it for myself. This video, actually changed my opinion on the game from this scary monolith to the modular simulation it really is. It's all about baby steps, sort of how DF came to be.
