Chris Delay and Mark Morris of Introversion (Developers of darwinia and prison architect) have been releasing videos for the prototypes they've rejected in their attempts to develop a new game to follow up on prison architect. There's been discussion of their creative process and the specific prototypes and where they feel they've fallen down.

It's been a bit as I've been trying to squeeze one or two of these in every now and then. But I've watched three of them now and I gotta say, these are great. They have some great products that they just put in the trash bc "ehh, kinda don't know where this one's going" and I want to play all of them.

There's too much there to really hone in on any one aspect in detail, but I think it's great to see the reasons why they dropped these wonderful prototypes. We've got the moon colony that died because the thing they built didn't turn out to be of the scope they wanted. We've got the space bots thing which died because people don't like programming things and also the game moved too much away from programming as a niche subject towards generic RTS with extra steps. And we've got the circuit board development game which didn't have the right direction for a puzzle game but did have lots of potential as a sandbox.

I'd really love to hear more about the failing stages of those prototypes. When did they notice problems? When did they pretty much know this was one for the dump? How much time in between, what did they spend it on? Did they try to fix the issues they had with the game?
