Steam is having another sale-fest and this time the theme is cooking.

It's not really a genre I have a lot of experience with but would certainly recommend PlateUp! (66% off) if you're interested in doing some 2-4 player co-op where you have to manage and run all the aspects you would expect in a restaurant.

Your main goal of course is to cook, serve and ultimately make it through 15 days of ever increasing customer volume. Between each day you're given the opportunity to purchase new equipment and organize/redesign your kitchen and dining areas to better suit your needs.

In the group that I've played with a couple of us have worked in a kitchen in our youth and my friends wife Vicky was previously a server so we naturally sorted ourselves between front and back of house. Vic' runs the dining room with blazing efficiency, yelling out orders while us boys in the back are ever scrambling to keep up and not burn the place down. It can be great, hectic fun but there have been a few occasions where we've shelved the game for some time after a particularly tough run as it can really feel a bit too much like work if you've ever done this stuff in real life.

Definitely worth $10 if any of this sounds interesting to you. And a side note for Factorio players, you can do a decent amount of automation in the kitchen with conveyor belts and auto-assemblers if you're lucky enough to get the right item/equipment choices between each day.

A cooking series I have a lot of fondness for is Cook, Serve, Delicious (other than Cook Serve Forever, which I haven't played due to the change in gameplay). The thing that sets them apart from other time management food service games, for me, is the control scheme. You have the option to type on your keyboard to assemble and serve the various food items, and (if you're a touch typer) you can get good at it and feel like you're flying through the orders with skill and efficiency. Which is not to say it's easy, because it's still pretty challenging. You can choose to use mouse or gamepad instead, but keyboard is my favorite.

I played all three Metro games this year, and especially Metro Exodus blew me away, it brings the character interactions to another level, and made me care about them. The missions felt purposeful, and less action thriller on rails, than the first two entries. I highly recommend it! It lands better if you've played 2033 and Last Light, but they aren't a necessity.

The new VR game, Metro Awakening, just came out too, but it isn't on sale

I'm eyeing Pillars of Eternity 2. $15 for base game + DLCs is good, but it has gone lower on Fanatical in the past year and I've got plenty of other cRPGs to play too. Of the sales titles, I can recommend Tyranny and Pillars of Eternity 1.

Tyranny is fun, you play after the big bad has won and you're one of the ranking officers sent to quell a remaining pocket of resistance, with the freedom to choose how the story plays out. It's a unique setting and perspective not often explored at this level of quality. Double check if you've already got it on Epic as a freebie.
