I don’t follow this stuff very closely but this appears to be happening in the wake of major leadership changes and layoffs. I should know better than to indulge in conspiracy theory, but the fact that this began at the end of the day on a Friday raised my eyebrow. Sony’s being weirdly tight-lipped about what’s happening, so I can’t help but wonder if this was either insider sabotage, or their staffing changes have left the company vulnerable to another hack.
My baseless speculation aside, this appears to be a very significant outage.

If anything, I'd put my money on merely something critical breaking at the wrong time and the last person who was familiar with that part of the infrastructure and knew how to fix it is no longer on the payroll (or on vacation/is ill/strictly enforces not being reachable by the company outside of work hours/random bureaucratic red tape is preventing them from intervening). If this was an attack, I think those responsible would have come forward by now.

It could also be that they hired someone fresh to come in and run a do-over on their systems. If they were truly concerned about security liabilities, turning it off until it's secured is a good move most companies would at least consider making. They might not announce it if departments are all on flux and things are chaotic. Usually if it goes down at end of business on a Friday, it's up by start of business on a Monday. I'd bet they are patching. We will see if the incoming team bit off more than they can chew if it's still down after the weekend.
I mentioned this to my mom, and she'd already heard about it on NPR. She said it was even a top-of-the-hour news story. Usually they talk about stuff like the Middle East or politics at that...

However, if it's consequences of engineering layoffs...I'm all for Sony learning from their mistakes the hard way.

I still think the game needs to be delayed so it gets optimized, right now it runs horribly even if I turn graphics down so it looks worse than World or Rise.

And I should clarify that when I say long in the tooth I don't necessarily mean age, but capability for the type of game they're going for with open world games. It works really well when you get more tight knit games like Resident Evil and more so Street Fighter, but seems to crap itself when there are too many NPCs around like in DD2 or Wilds.
Is PSN still not working for you? It's been back online since around midnight PST for my friends and I despite the status page saying otherwise, but it seems like it might be regional.

And this is a secondary conversation about DRM and the state of the games industry, but outages like this are a stark reminder that you don’t own your games. Even single-player titles are unreachable until the auth servers come back online.

I think this is what bothers me most. I am not effected by this outage as I'm an Xbox user, but my spouse and I enjoy co-op gaming. We both have separate consoles and TVs and the fact that we wouldn't even be able to play on a local network with games that we have purchased (twice - since we have separate consoles) is an issue. I grew up during the time of LAN parties, where everyone just had to have a copy of the game and be connected on the same network. No worry about if the host was experiencing difficulties or the game no longer being supported. This is the exact reason why I buy so few games every year. What is the point, if we aren't able to play?

On a more meta level, even if the service they provide is relatively frivolous compared to the subjects of discussion that are Important™ to society as a whole, Sony and by extension Sony Interactive Entertainment, the video game focused subsidiary, is an absolutely massive corporation and any major disruption to their activities is significant enough to be a news-worthy event if only because of the impact on the wider market.
Picking another tangentially related recent event, NVIDIA's stock tanked because of an event that is otherwise a nothingburger to the general public, but since anything that affects a company as massively important to the worldwide economy as NVIDIA is automatically something to pay attention to, that by itself was a good enough reason to bring it to the headlines everywhere for a while, including this website.
As far as Tildes specifically is concerned, it seems the userbase here is already primed to pay attention to tech news and by extension the current GenAI hype train, so that definitely factored in too, just like video games news like what this thread is about are also relevant to most of this website's members' interests.

Looks like stuff is fine again though? According to their page at least.
Opportunities for stopkillinggames.com to capitalise on current events don't show up often, but here's to hoping this gains some more traction after this weekend.

Depends very much on who, what, and why. If Sony is getting ransomed neither party benefits from broadcasting it widely right now.
Whether ignorance or malice, I wouldn't expect an accurate analysis made public. A politically correct one? Maybe.

PlayStation Network Service Status link for the current situation.

Currently looks sporadically available depending on the region, service and game.
