I took about a 2-year hiatus from the game and just got back into playing a couple months ago. This is unwelcome news as I, and I'm sure many others, dislike the microtransactions and codes/links to get more moves/dice rolls. I just uninstalled another game that went to this monetization strategy and will not hesitate to do the same with PokemonGo if that change is made.

Interesting that Ingress is not part of the sale. Just going to be us agents working on their AR database though.

Speaking of that, what about the cross pollination of Ingress portals and Pokestops? I note that they've sold Wayfarer too, so that doesn't bode well for the long term health of the Ingress map. Wonder if they'll come up with something else for that.

More questions than answers at this stage.

I wonder if that means they'll be winding it down? Ingress is ancient by mobile game standards.... Or maybe it just means they'll still have sellable data available. If you are looking to move on...

If you are looking to move on from Niantic but still want a "go outside" game, I've really been enjoying Orna. It's an AR RPG not entirely dissimilar to Pokemon, but the depth of story and gameplay is wildly better, no ads at all, no p2w (the stuff you can buy is all cosmetic as far as I can tell), and like, it actually teaches you organically how to play (crazy, I know). It's also less punishing if you take a break from it, nothing is "you will NEVER see this again!!1! like Pokemon wants you to believe.

I did take the OPA test back in the day though. I've been involved with Ingress and Pokemon Go a long ass-time.

If Pokemon Go gets (further) enshittified, and Ingress shuts down, I'll just stop probably.

Fair! Just to be clear, it's AR insofar as you walk around outside and find dungeons to crawl, and items to pick up, and monsters to fight, but there's no camera involved (and you can play with friends, and actually see their characters on screen). I get ya tho, I played daily for... Yikes, 8 years. Jesus. Finally stopped this last August, because the whole thing was just getting too ridiculous. I'm just really bad about going outside if I don't have "a reason," so Orna it is lol.

Oooh, I'm going to give this a try! Is there any particular faction I should join over the others, or are they all pretty equal?

When I started a couple years ago the factions didn't matter much, so I just chose my favorite color.

If there are people you want to play with you'll (probably) want to be in the same faction, but otherwise the only difference I've seen is which flavor of monuments you can enter without a key. I'm only level at tier 8 though, so no idea what happens beyond that.

I'm much more annoyed because Niantic was publishing the best free photogrammetry app out there, Scaniverse, which supported both mesh and gaussian splatting. I just checked on the App Store and it looks like the name of the publisher has been changed to "Toolbox AI", which is just gross.

So I guess the future of 3D scanning is buying a dedicated scanner for hundreds of dollars and be stuck with their PC-only applications of varying and sometimes questionable quality.

(re-reading the article, Scopely might have just acquired their video game assets and not the entire company. The renaming on the app store is still worrying, though.)

I'm not sure how much they've been affected by the Epic purchase, but Capturing Reality was an awesome photogrammetry platform. Be it a little pricey.

It seems like you're looking for the wrong thing? I see Scaniverse just fine in the app store, with Niantic as the publisher. Link

Look it up again on the Apple App Store.

On Apple I think it's always been published by Toolbox AI, since before Niantic acquired it. https://nianticlabs.com/news/scaniverse?hl=en

Ah, OK then. I just didn't remember it saying Toolbox AI before. In the app it still says Niantic like it has been since I started using it.

Instead of Pokemon Go, I play Street Complete that fills a similar niche. And that time filling a giant database is the actual point since you're contributing to the Openstreetmap project.

I bounced off Pokémon Go years ago, but I have been having fun playing Monster Hunter Now. Since launch it's gotten lots of updates and good QoL features, and I do hope that keeps up.
