The only other times I've ever encountered it besides that was at Best Buy and Canadian Tire though, but only when I was picking up a pre-ordered item. So it definitely does still occasionally happen at other places besides Gamestop.
It is indeed a plastic screen on the Switch 2, too. See JerryRigEverything's latest video where he puts his through the ringer: Nintendo Switch 2 Durability Test! cc: @mild_takes

Weird that they would put plastic above glass, one of the primary reasons the original iPhone went with glass when everyone else was using plastic was for scratch resistance.

I was going to say best of both worlds would presumably be a replaceable glass screen protector on top of a plastic top layer for the actaual screen, and now I'm wondering why devices don't come from the factory like that...
Screen protectors are even more prone to cracking. Nintendo wants to get ahead of the “omg my kid ate glass shards!!!!” lawsuits. People are free to add their own glass layers.

Thin layer of cardboard
That thin, translucent foamy wrap stuff
The Switch screen.
Seems pretty susceptible to impacts or, you know, staples.
They could at least position it so the screen isn't facing the box's front. Presentation doesn't look as nice, but the screen is the more fragile part.

So, saw this post on reddit from someone who talked to the manager. Good news is the store is getting some units from other stores to replace the damaged one, and she also gave an explanation: I...
So the reason they used a stapler was because the air conditioner was broken (which it was) it was hot and humid in the store and that the tape wasn’t taking/sticking to the boxes and the paper would fall off very easily so they were told to staple it. To keep all the stuff together since they had over 100 preorders coming in. I actually feel terrible a simple mistake might cost these guys their job.
I thought the receipts might have been attached for keeping track of preorders, but now we know why they didn't use tape. Just makes me sad for the workers who will lose their job over this. If they hadn't stapled the box's fronts, it probably would have been a fine enough solution.
Though unless the AC broke that same day, the big villains are whoever didn't authorize its repair earlier.
Never worked minimum wage somewhere with hot summers, huh? I can't think of a single low-status job I've ever had where the owners/corporate cared more about their employees suffering heatstroke...

I worked a Domino's one particularly hellish summer when all us grunts took turns standing in the walk-in cooler because we had a giant fuck-off oven running at 500°F/260°C and nothing but an undersized swamp cooler to keep the place survivable. It's a dismal shame no one thought to sic OSHA on those bastards. It's been 20 years, and I still harbor a grudge for that SOB franchisee.
Fuck you, Mark Pectal. Your dumb haircut didn't make you look like Bon Jovi, it made you look like a midget with a bad mullet.
It's true that regulations are written with blood. I always wondered why highschools do not make work place safety regulations and minimum wage standards part of the curriculum.

Minimum wage? Even DoD can hardly keep the AC on in the summer if you're not at a major installation. Can you imagine working an entire Texas summer in a building with no AC?

I think it's the humidity that would do it. People mentioned it's really hot and humid in New York right now, and it can build up even worse indoors if there's no AC.

I do not see why Nintendo should account for metal being shoved inside the packaging.. which is not the norm anywhere that I know of.
Might as well demand they make their packaging water-proof just in case a store employee decides to dump their drinks on it.
I think the concern is more that if staples can damage the screen... Well, there are plenty of examples of how roughly delivery companies can handle packages. The risk isn't that big, but when you...

Phones are even more expensive(2/3 times the price even), but I do not see anyone complaining about phone packaging.
I would say that stores/people just have to use common sense and not use a staple gun on items.
Trying to partially blame the packaging is weird to me, unless it was wrapped in newspapers only.
I have a Switch 2 and the packaging was appropriate for the contents. (Also when ordering online, the Switch 2 box comed packed inside a larger box so you cant see its a Switch)

While I agree, who even does that? I don't think I've ever before encountered a store stapling the receipt onto any item.
I haven't shopped at Gamestop in ages but I do remember it happening to me at Gamestop stores up here in Canada back when I did. So it might actually be SOP for Gamestop to do that.

I'm also surprised it COULD puncture the screen. So many devices today have glass screens. The Switch 2 must have a plastic exterior for the screen.
The Switch 1 had a plastic screen, with Nintendo citing safety concerns over shattered glass, so I would suspect the Switch 2 has the same.
It is indeed a plastic screen on the Switch 2, too. See JerryRigEverything's latest video where he puts his through the ringer: Nintendo Switch 2 Durability Test!

It's not a plastic screen per se, but a laminated glass screen. There's a layer of plastic above the screen.

I'm going to put a tempered glass screen protector over mine

It's strange how one dumb person at one GameStop makes this an IGN article.
Just unpacked my husband’s Switch 2. The screen is flush against the front of the box. It’s pretty much:

It's an eco-friendly thing. Less packaging and all that.
They could at least position it so the screen isn't facing the box's front. Presentation doesn't look as nice, but the screen is the more fragile part.
To be fair it sounds like it's enough packaging normally. It didn't break in transit. It took someone pushing metal through the packaging to break it.
The unboxing experience is really important for the views though, so I can't imagine they'd do that.
