Who gets the Steam Frame? Did Valve pick you for the first wave?
There are certainly a few people here, who will be buying Steam Frame VR headset.
I enlisted myself a few days ago for the first wave lottery reservations. After a bit of thought, I also enlisted my daughter, to double my chances from almost 0% to double of that but still near zero in my eyes.
A few minutes ago I got e-mail. I'm on waiting list after first wave goes out... Well, maybe this year?
My daughter checked her e-mail as well. And what do you know? Doubling of the chances paid off and the chance was actually higher than near 0% - her account got picked by Valve! It seems we are getting the headset in upcoming days/weeks.
Now the question is: Should we get the head and handstraps also? I think we should. But I don't knowbif I should get also new foam/seal. I'm not spending 170€ on color camera, at least not for now.
Sorry for this kind of post, we are just so happy and I wanted to share the happiness. I hope some of you got on the list for first wave as well.
From 2 hours ago:
No timeline or anything so not sure exactly what this means.
Edit:
I'm in!
Oh damn, that means I'm in as well! Nice!
Maybe the worst email communication I've ever seen. You shouldn't need to go to the FAQ to decode a simple yes/no email. The fact that they include a link in the email to the FAQ so you can figure out what the email means is crazy.
If I didn't ha e two different e-mails, I would be stumped as well.
Congratulations!
I read this as "In upcoming days, you will get your chance to buy the Frame". The e-mail for the waiting list (after first wave) is different.
EDIT: Congratulations!
Congrats! I’m super excited for you and everyone else who got lucky.
Other people have covered the straps (and I agree, you should get them). So here are my thoughts on the other accessories you asked about:
A replacement face gasket is nice if you’re planning to sweat in your headset (and it sounds like you are!). My exercise one gets soaked every session, but whenever I have friends over and they’re going to be in the headset (playing, say, Taskmaster), I swap it out with a separate clean one.
As for a light blocker, some people like the isolation it gives, but personally, I prefer having the gap at my nose. I can check my watch for the time, notifications, and my heart rate all without taking off the headset. Also, I like being able to peek down and get an idea of my orientation in the real world.
No idea if the head cushion is necessary, but comfort is comfort!
So, none of those are essential but an alternate gasket is great if you’re planning on sharing the headset with anyone else.
I do expect a lot of third party offerings of these same items to pop up soon, so you might be able to save some money by waiting those out.
I will be buying straps kit, that's for sure. Based on your comment, I will get the gasket kit as well. I will be exercising with it and other people will be using it as well.
I wonder - can the gasket be cleaned somehow? I understand you don't know about Frame's gasket, but what do you do with yours? Just careful hand wash in warm water with some soap or something?
I just realized I never responded to you, sorry!
Reading what other people have said, I am not sure if I should publicly admit to this, but I've never actually like, wash washed my face gasket. I just wipe it down sometimes.
I did buy a washable wrap that goes around the back of my headset, and that I actually do throw in with my clothes sometimes. Because it's porous fabric, I'm not sure how much it actually keeps sweat off the rest of the device, but I figure at the very least it's not hurting.
Here's how I clean my current VR equipment:
The sponge gasket may be gross in the way that it requires washing every time but it's actually very useful that it soaks up sweat instead of it running down your face and into your eyes while you're exercising.
This is it. I'm getting additional gasket right from the get go. Seems like logical step since I'm gonna be beat sabering - One in use, one drying out.
Thanks for the tips.
My index gaskets I either wash in hot water and let air dry, or for lazy days a good wipe with wet wipes. I've recently gotten a steam cleaner that might also be good, but I'd perhaps worry about the adhesive that holds it to the plastic frame
Thanks for the tips!
Nice! I watched the GamersNexus review, they all seemed to think the straps were almost required. I was lucky enough to also get in the purchase queue and I will definitely be getting the straps. It's annoying that they come separately, but I understand their desire to keep the base price as low as possible.
Sorry for double reply. Did you get 256GB or 1TB?
Are you getting addittional foam/seals? What do you thing about the 170€ high-res color AR camera?
I like the camera. Being able to play normal.PC games or work on the desktop and "see" the real world seems good idea. Also taking real.world and making a model of it. But for now I will pass. I'll see what people do with it and maybe get it later or never.
No worries! I'm also very excited for it so very happy to chat haha.
I got the 256gb, since it was a lot cheaper and I plan to use it more in streaming mode (and the SD slot should be fine for extra storage).
Probably won't get the extra cushions, I feel like it's not totally necessary and there will probably be 3rd party versions when mine do wear out. But I am veeery interested in the camera, as I want to try some passthrough shenanigans with my sim racing setup. But yeah same boat, I'm probably going to wait on that a bit, since it's a 3rd party purchase and not straight from the same purchase queue as the frame.
Also, just being able to see the real world is definitely super nice, both from a practical standpoint and a gaming standpoint. Practically, it's super annoying to have to take off the headset whenever you need to do something in the real world (use the keyboard, for example). Then there's the AR gaming potential as well.
I tried the passthrough on PS VR2 with its monochromatic cameras and it worked well enough to be able to move in the real.world or chat with the headset owner. Frame seems to have infrared cameras that give the pinky-violet hue which may be a bit worse than monochromatic, but also.makes it usable in dark. I will see how it works. The add-on camera is nice but quite pricy for "just adding color" (I know it can do more).
I want to wait for reviews of it, but it also does look like a way higher resolution, which is definitely a big plus. I also wonder if other 3rd cameras will start cropping up
It is definitely higher resolution and overall doean't look bad, but with other accessories it would make Frame almost 1500 and that's simply too much to put down at day one.
I also watched Gamers Nexus video and I will be getting them too. I want them for finger tracking, so I can actually release the gamepads and they won't fall down. And the nose anti-bleed thing is good as my kids with their smaller heads and noses will be using it as well. The headstrap seems to be 50/50 - needed for some, unnecessary for others. We'll see!
I'm happy for you! I'm really looking forward to getting this piece of concentrated technology into my hands. Ir ratber on my face.
Yo, congrats, I'm excited for you!! Did you get the 256GB or 1TB?
I think they're still being gradually sent out so fingers crossed for me, but it's also ok if I have to wait.
I got the plebs version, I'm not a millionare. And I have 512GB card in Steam Deck to use in Frame...
I wonder how many people want them. My gzess is 50k units ready to go now with millions of people wanting them.
btw I had an index and I can't imagine using VR without hand straps.
I also had a 3rd party headstrap (something with a counterweight ) which I would consider essential, but I dunno with the frame cuz it's much lighter.
Funny thing is I was considering getting used Index a year ago. And then Frame dropped.
Frame is lighter and also more balanced with battery being on the back of your head. Still, I will get the straps. Better be safe than sorry.
Congrats mate! Sadly I didn’t get picked so I’ll have to wait.
Handstrap: trust me, get them! I got them for my meta quest 3 and I couldn’t live without them. There may be times where you want to rest your hands for a bit and with the handstraps you can just open your hands without worry.
And it’s also a bit about security. Some games will have you shaking your arms a lot so you’ll have insurance that you won’t send your controller flying.
There are also a few games that track your fingers, and if I’m not mistaken the Frame’s controllers are able to track all 5, so that would be something you would be missing out on (granted, not a huge deal, but still).
Edit: thanks to @teaearlgraycold , turns out the email I received means I got in!
I also think straps are needed for hand controllers. Being able to utilize full fi ger movement or just not worry about dropping controllers while playing... It seems worth it just for that.
Another thing is my kids with their smaller geads/faces/noses will use it and the extra nose skirt seems to be needed for them. Too bad they sell it separately, but the base price is high enough on its own, so I understand they don't ship it within the base price. Bad times for products like this and their pricing.
Congrats! Definitely get the handstraps, yeah. I used an OG vive before my index, and being able to flex my fingers without dropping or needing to reposition my hands was amazing
Well, after not receiving an email of any kind after 14 hours, I assumed I was just at the butt end of the wait-list (or that the system had lost me somehow). But waking up this morning turns out I'm in the reservation queue! To be honest waiting a month or two probably wouldve been preferable, but I'm still excited to get it
Nice! It seems like many people got into reservations. Maybe there are more than 50k units or there are less than millions of people wanting them.
Waitlisted on the 256GB. I’m more than ready to be done with Meta and their nonsense. The Frame might not be perfect but if it’s even 80% of the Quest 2 for PCVR purposes (and it sounds like it’s better), that’s good enough for me.
I would’ve pulled the trigger on a Bigscreen Beyond 2, but the lighthouse and controller situation there isn’t great if you’re not already set up for the SteamVR ecosystem. The Frame solves both of those nicely.
Same. And the pimax dream air SE seems somewhat compelling but has so many downsides. About 90% of my usage will be sim racing so it feels a little silly to get a wireless standalone headset but I'm just done with meta and these other untrustworthy companies
I read some rumors that valve is investigating adding a hardwired mode, but I also don't think that would be possible with a single USB-C port.
My hope is that somebody will figure out how to use the expansion slot to make it possible to hardwire.
What does hardwired mean here?
In this context - able to transit video and data to a PC over a cable rather than wirelessly, which would come with a very solid reduction in latency.
Having used the headset for a bit now, the streaming latency really wasn't noticeable to me.
Weird, I didn't get any email today despite getting one confirming I'm on the list. Maybe I can hope this means I'm on a shortlist if folks waive theirs. I plan on getting those extra straps, GN made a good argument for them being more necessary than optional
Update: I'm in a tz where it is still 9/17, they say emails go out 9/18, I just assumed they meant Valve time.
Wait listed :/
Yeah, ther were 1:2 in favor for straps. I'm getting them for sure.
I'm CEST timezone (central Europe), maybe they send e-mails in different times for different parts of world? Others could help figure that out.
I did not win, but a friend who I asked to enter did, but he might actually want it himself and I'm waiting to hear back from other people 😂. I really want this thing
So you still don't know :-) This is the thing that can test friendships :-D
I strongly considered it, but it was just too expensive. Even the base model is over $1000, and you have to tack on hundreds more to future proof storage, get decent pass-through, and make it actually comfortable to wear and hold. And at that price, it was disappointing to get weak battery life and no OLED.
Tbh, I'm thinking of getting a Quest 3. It has comparable specs, and would be a massive leap over my OG Vive. Meta is gross but I figure a throwaway account and buying used on eBay minimizes the harm. I just wonder how well it works tethered vs. wireless, and how the Linux support is.
If you are not interested in the Steam Frame, I would at least wait for the new Pico coming this year (Project Swan) before buying Meta.
Hadn't heard of that one -- the specs seem great, but what looks to be a ~$1500-2000+ expected price tag stings. I can find a used Quest 3 for less than 20% of that.
I was considering the higher storage too. If the market was normal, I think 1TB would cost the base price of 1000€ with 256GB costing 800€. That would still be viable, but this is too much.
But I believe 256GB would be enough. The VR games are not that big and the headset wpuldn't have that much power to run those big games of today meaning I would have to stream them from desktop where I have the space for them. I don't even understand why 1TB version exists. My desktop has 512GB SSD for games and I can cope with that pretty well.
I wouldn't buy Quest. But that is based simply on my principles. If you ignore the privacy stuff and who made it, it is pretty nice value for the price.
Didn't cross my fingers hard enough :(
You'll get one eventually. I was waiting for Steam Deck for three months. I was helping people with their first Linux steps while not having a device to try them on! But since I got it, it got used HARD. The wait was worthwhile.
I didn't expect to get one in the first wave. Well, I, personally, didn't get one, my daughter did :-D I hope she will let me play here and there... I have to finance it afterall :-D
Well, I'm worried the price of the unit is going to increase before I ever get the chance to order it.
I might have to ask Valve, but I doubt I'll get a satisfying answer. Nobody had to put any money down for this lottery, so they're under no obligation to keep the price as-is. And I don't think 2027 is looking good in that regard.
I'll just try and forget about this product until I get the opportunity to purchase it. No point in holding on to the excitement from launch for an indeterminate amount of time :P
This is healthy attitude.
The have no obligation to keep the price, but I would also say that Valve is fair company who wouldn't increase price if they don't really have to. I bought my 16GB 6000MT/s DDR5 RAM this January for around 150€, nowadays it costs almost 200. If this keeps on going, they may have to raise the price, but I believe they will keep it for as long as possible, probably for all people who joined the lottery and are now on waiting list. I would expect them to.
I got a reservation email for the 256GB model.
I'll be getting the strap accessories. The controller straps really seem like they're an integral part of the controller and should be part of the base kit but whatever, what can you do.
Probably won't bother with the charger since I have more USB-C cables and power adapters lying around than I know what to do with.
Charger is simple no-go for me. I have one from Steam Deck, one from its dock and a few more different ones lying around even with 3 metera long cables. But strap kit seems to be essential thing. I will likely get the other kit as well, as I plan on exercising and having others play on it, swappable foam gaslets seem to be good idea for that.
I’ll be getting the frame later this year :/
Does anyone have the steam machine? My daughter needs a computer and I’m wondering if that would be a good fit, especially if I’m going to get a frame too
I got put on the wait-list for the Frame but since I just got the Machine I'm more than ok with that. Two large in just as many months is a bit much.
The Machine is a bit divisive so it really matters what you want to get out of it. For starters, it's very quiet and very small making it an ideal PC to just plop down anywhere. Although it doesn't feel like that's the intended use case, it's easy to transport or move.
What do you want your daughter to do with a PC of her own? I could be more specific if I knew how it'll be used.
I'm not who you replied to, but I wonder - what made you buy Steam Machine?
I love the technology side of it - how Valve managed to make it so small and so quiet while pretty powerful. But I wouldn't buy it for the price, I'd rather buy parts and make my own PC even it it would cost me more - I like to be able to upgrade or be left with useful parts (SSD, power supply, case, fans...) when I want to change the whole PC (ie. DDR3 for DDR5 system).
The thing is I would want to buy Steam Machine, as I really like the idea and execution, but I wouldn't be able to justify the money for a PC with kinda foreseeable end-of-life. What is your reasoning behind you getting one? If you would like to talk about it, of course.
To be clear, I don't want to question your decision, I think you made good decision. Just the reasoning behind it...
A couple of reasons really. Admittedly, none as strong as "I just want one".
I've always had consoles but felt that it wasn't a value add in recent times. For the first time ever, I sold my console (a PS5) which in previous generations I've never done. In fact I still own all of my older consoles. The Gabecube fills that gap where I can plop it down in my living room without being annoyingly ugly, annoyingly large, or annoyingly loud, while still allowing me to just pick up a controller and go play stuff. With the unlocked OS I can play whatever the hell I want instead of being locked into the Sony store as the Steam Machine is a pretty neat little emulator device.
Additionally, with Moonlight/Sunshine/Apollo/ForkXYZ available it's just so easy to play games from my large Steam library on my television. This also partially alleviates the "end of life" concerns as the hardware designed to run the games on 4k High/Ultra is my beefy PC. It also means I was never really bothered by the somewhat middle of the road hardware as any upgrade to my main PC is an indirect upgrade to the Steam Machine. Yeah it's technically worse than a PS5, but somehow through the magic of Moonlight/Sunshine my games actually perform better than they would on a PS5.
Also also, devices actually going end of life is really difficult nowadays as you can always turn it into a media hub, a streaming device, or something similar. If you're truly out of options, a web browsing, document editor is enough of a home PC my daughter could potentially use in a couple of years. Added benefit is having a shared PC in the living room that anyone can access with a wireless KBM set.
There's also SteamOS and its adoption. It has been largely beneficial for the consumer writ large. Starting with the Steam Deck (that I also own) I think fostering this growing ecosystem is a worthwhile investment. I'm very happy with my decision to buy the Deck as it felt like a truly groundbreaking paradigm shift that I wanted to encourage. You mentioned it too: Steam's hardware is yours. The consumer has a much better control and ownership over their device and this is a political, ethical, and moral consideration that I find compelling.
We've gone from people sticking with Windows because games, to having an OS that genuinely threatens Windows hegemony on home PCs.
Lastly, I just think it's cool. I like the way it looks, I like the presentation of it, and I like how easy it is to work on it.
Even if the price is steep, I don't particularly fault Valve for this nor do I think it'll ever be cheaper. This is the new AI reality. I was lucky I landed a new, better paying job so I sort of got it as a gift to myself as I'm not stressed about my personal finances right now.
Very well said. I can agree with everything you wrote.
In fact I'm gonna go farther - my daughter uses Core i5-4690 based PC. Yes, that is 10+ years old hardware, but it gets the job done and using Linux, it doesn't even need more oomph, it is very usable for everyday tasks and backed up by modern software. Steam Machine could easily be something like that in 10 years from now - It has enough oomph to be just normal desktop PC for that many years and probably longer.
The one reason I would think about Steam Machine is the same as with Steam Deck - I love how Valve approached it. It is yours, if you want, throw Windows on it, reinstall whatever you want, play emulated games or pirated ones, they just don't care, it is yours. In today's worlds, this is very bold stance from them and I like that.
In fact this is why I'm buying Frame for the cost of two new Meta Quests 3 or probably 3-4 used ones or two used Indexes etc. I waited for Frame because it is worth it for me - the wait AND the money. I want to own my hardware and not be greeted by "This hardware is not supported anymore" one day in the future. Yeah, Valve will eventually drop support for Frame, but that means it won't get updates, but it will still work as it did up to that point, I believe they won't artificially cut it off.
It's great to know somebody who has Steam Machine personally. Nobody around me got it, their arguments are like mine - we are all hardcore PC enthusiasts, we love tinkering with hardware. And to buy it just for fun, the price really is steep.
Yeah and to this point: I very nearly decided against it. I'm somewhat of an enthusiast myself and the price/performance ratio is just ever so slightly off with the Machine.
Now what convinced me after all is that price/quality wise there's a decent value proposition in there. I can expect reasonable support, don't have to fidget with interoperability with different hardware types (like, is this RAM kit supported in combination with this CPU), and while you can create a small form factor device with similar or more powerful hardware yourself, it will never look like it's a device that was designed from the ground up. Even just the LED strip on the front being integrated with SteamOS out of the box just feels like you bought a device that was created with thoughtful design. Nothing about it feels cheap or rushed. In that sense, it's very similar to a plug 'n play console. Except under the hood it's more than that.
I'm lucky my wife and I have a solid financial status at the moment with our shared family bank account. We also both have our own separate bank accounts and after we deposit a set amount into the family account the rest ends up being just play money we can spend as we wish on our own stuff. I happened to have enough for a Steam Machine so I went for it without feeling like it would endanger our collective finances. That's not the case for everyone and if someone is at all worried about their financial status I'd probably advise against buying the Steam Machine, because yeah.. the price really is steep.
Not the person you asked, but I see it as a kind of steam deck - if you know what you're playing and will be for the next x years, and those run just fine... Its a good deal. And once you can't run the latest and greatest game in 5-6 years, you can still play the old ones, or you can turn it into a media device or basic office PC.
I actually have Steam Deck and at the time I bought it, it was on par in framerate department as my desktop was. I understand your answer.
Maybe if I was fed up with consoles and was looking into PCs, I would actually buy the Steam machine. My PS3 ended like that back in the day - I just bought desktop PC. If I had a PS4 as my gaming device nowadays, I might have just bought the Steam Machine. But since I have desktop for around last 15 years (after my PS3 journey, as I had desktop before PS3 as well), I'm investing into upgrading that instead of buying premade PC, which Steam Machine ultimately is.
It would be wonderful media center, it would be wonderful kinda hassle free console-like experience to play PC games on TV, it is small, light and portable, it has desktop mode... It kinda ticks many many boxes, but I'm spoiled by normal PC by this point.
Your answer is very good though, it brings in many points and reminds me how I thought when buying Steam Deck. I have many older games that I haven't played yet and they just run on my hardware.
Well, after spending almost literal ton on Steam Frame, I will start saving up for some GPU, as I want to treat myself for the very first time in my life to something decent. If I had to buy today, RX 9070 XT would be my dream card. We'll see how fast I can accumulate money and what is out there when I do. Seems like GPU market is stagnant at this point.
Also not the person you asked. I wanted to be able to play games on my TV in the living room without having to put my big full-size desktop on the floor in front of the media center (it simply won't fit anywhere else). I tried streaming but never found it to work well.
I also very much want to support gaming on linux. My gaming desktop runs Bazzite and is mostly seamless, but the integrated, first-party-support nature of the Steam Machine is appealing to me.
So the Steam Machine gives me a well supported linux box that fits nicely on a shelf under my TV. It runs all the games I like to play perfectly well.
Steam Machine is a bit mixed thing in my mind. It is powerful enough but not that much future proof. It is very small and would be great as a.PC connected to TV (for gaming and for.other stuff, say media center). It costs quite a lot for what it is, but that's just current state of market.
It is very nice.packet of quite powerful hardware with the software side probably nicely ironed out. If it's worth it for you, I can't say. It runs Linux, it may be a problem if daughter needs sometging Windows related (for school or some spcialized software for something).
Ethan Lee just updated his .plan with a bunch of native arm64 ports of the indie games he's worked on if any Linux fans with the hardware wants to help him test:

On the 17th I got "You're officially in the reservation queue for Steam Frame 256GB Kit"
Nothing else since.
Until I saw this thread I assumed that meant I lost the lottery, but apparently that's the good email?
I've been using a vive for 10 years so I'm looking forward to an upgrade. Mostly for beatsaber.
Yes, reservation is the good version and waiting (or some other words, I got my e-mail in my native language) is the bad one. I know that since we got both e-mails in the family.
Just got the purchase email : "Please confirm your Purchase Information for Steam Frame 256GB Kit"
It had a link I was able to add to cart and order. I think it said 6-10 days to ship. I added the strap package. the foam package was "sold out" . Tomorrow I'll probably order the camera thing.
Very nice, it is finally going out to people! Thanks for the info. Bad about the foam package, but I hope at least the strap one will be available when I have the chance to order.
European markets have different levels of stock. You may get lucky on the foam yet.
Well, I'd prefer the straps, actually :-) If I can, I would like having both. But the first thing have to be the e-mail.
256GB Kit and straps, invite email and ordered on 9/22
Shipping email on 9/25. It shipped from ontario, CA , pretty close to me.
This morning tracking showed eta today 11-2pm "out for delivery" then at 2 it changed to 3-6pm , then at 6 it changed to "Reschedule Delivery Requested, This package is being held for a future delivery date." . I didn't request anything. Maybe that just means the driver didn't get it to it today? Hopefully Monday. First world problems.
Edit: now it's saying it's scheduled for delivery on Tuesday 9/29 . Could valve have asked them to delay it for some reason?
Yeah, it seems driver had a bit too.much to deliver and you were rescheduled.
I'm still waiting for the order e-mail. Europe, btw.
I am officially on the list. I'll have some thinking to do!
Happy thinking!
Any Europeans got their hands on this thing yet?
@Pavouk106 how about yourself? Any luck? You were in on the release lottery after all whereas I was drawn later.
Reason I ask is because I just randomly looked at the Steam Frame store page and it's now featuring different text it definitely didn't have before. I'm still in the reservation queue but it now lists my "estimated order availability" as 2027.
I'm sure they're having supply line issues, no surprise in the general hardware/chip market but the whole wait list as opposed to reservation queue difference is a bit lost on me.
I could've just as easily been on the wait list until my number came up if the earliest opportunity is two or more months away.
Not mad, as I said earlier in this thread I'm fine with waiting, I'm just puzzled.
I'm in the US but my store page now also shows the estimated order availability of 2027. I was checking the page periodically because I was paranoid I'd miss the email and this is the first I've seen that message.
I'm disappointed because the different wording made it seem like they already had a product ready to ship to people on the reservation list vs the wait list...
Thanks for asking. I was hesitant to ask again, but for me no luck. I'm still in reservation queue (my daughter is, in fact) and no e-mail yet. I'm 256GB, Europe (Czech Republic, specifically).
I'm also puzzled by the situation. Maybe they are doing slow rollout to ease logistics on their side? Or the didn't have the units in the warehouses yet when they did the lottery... Well, I will patiently wait, what more can I do, really.
I also kept my own account on wait list. Once I actually get the Frame in my hands, I will cancel that.
I guess my family is probably getting the 1 TB version? I joined the wait list for the 256 GB and didn't get in, but one of my family's accounts got in for the 1 TB model. I mostly want a Beat Saber machine again...
I don’t really get the point of the 1TB model. It sounds like the frame is only good in standalone mode with simpler games (or first-party heavily optimized titles like Alyx). Would you really need so much storage for beat saber-like games? My primary computer only has 1TB. Why would a headset need 1TB?
I said the same thing. Fewer people seem to have signed up for it, so we have one en-route.
Nice! I'm surprised how many people got into reservations. I thought it will be like 1-5% and from the people here it seem to be 7 in 11.
Has anyone gotten the purchase link yet? I’m worried I’ll miss it. This should have been a simpler process.
I haven't gotten mine but you have a three day window to purchase when your turn comes up so as long as you're checking your email at least every other day you should be fine.
You can also just check the product page. Supposedly when you're eligible you'll be able to purchase it there regardless of if you look at the email or not.
Nope, not yet. The timing is starting to be unfortunate for VR sale ending on 21st. I want to be sure I have the headset before I start buying games. But there are a few I will get even if the purchase link doesn't arrive before the sale ends.
Has anyone had the opportunity to actually order the frame so far? Seems lots of people (myself included) are in the reservation queue, but I haven't had the order email yet and am curious if others have or if the rollout is just real slow
I got my order email last night and ordered right away. Looks like it'll be ready to ship tomorrow
It seems roll.out is really slow. I didn't have the order e-mail yet as well.
But since the VR salenon Steam goes down on 21st, this day, I have bought a bunch of games already. Some easy to pickup ones like Fruit Ninja or SimplePlanes, Walkabout Mini Golf, The Last Clockwinder and the one and only Beat Saber - this one with DLC pack Monstercat Mixtape 2, because, well, it's called beat saber and Monstercat Mixtape has the beats! Not the music I listen to, but perfect for such game.
I'm sorry for spam, I was just curious about how the reservations/order are going for you. Did you get order e-mail yet? Have you ordered Frame? Or are you happy owner of your new VR headset already?
Just to put out some statistics: I haven't received the order e-mail yet, I'm in Europe. Two people from the list received order e-mail already.
If some update comes in the future and you feel like sharing, could you please reply to this specific comment?

@teaearlgraycold @JCAPER @derekiscool @Chemslayer @Interesting @puhtahtoe @lelio @MinoriGot mine yesterday. It is soooo much more comfortable than my old headset (vive pro 2). It actually looks clearer too, despite a lower pixel count. My guess is because the screen door effect is so minimal.
My biggest worry was latency while streaming, but it wasn't noticeable in most games I tried. It was really only noticeable in iRacing, but even then it wasn't terrible. I probably won't race online with it, but it could be done if you can handle the slight latency. Eventually I want to get the HD camera and figure out an AR setup.
The pass through camera obviously isn't amazing, but I expected a bit worse based on the reviews. It's kinda fun to see the world in IR tbh.
I would like to play some racing games with this VR, but I'm not planning going online. And I'm not even talking about my skill, or rather lack of :-) The latency would be the least of my problems, I think.
The passthrough IR cameras - I suppose they do the "VR zone" recognition to some point and let you see the bare minimum to orient yourself if need be. I don't plan on using them for any AR. The HD camera looks great for that purpose, but I don't really think it is a must for me.
Nice to read review on Frame! Thanks!
Receiving my own today actually!
Got the email a day after your post and bought it then.
Details:
After I use it for a bit I can create a post sharing my experience
Edit:
A few first impressions, but keep in mind so far I only updated it and put it downloading some games, so it's to early to say I have any formed opinions:
Thank you for the first insights!
I got mine yesterday!
256GB Kit and ergonomic straps,
Invite email and ordered on 9/22,
Shipping email on 9/25,
Arrived on 9/29.
I'm crazy busy so I've only played with it for 30 mins or so. Native SteamOS only.
The passthrough is better than the OG Vive but not by much. I just ordered the color camera.
I played Beatsaber, and Flashback to test a classic 2d game.
So far looks great, very comfortable and convenient. I played beatsaber outside for the first time.
the controllers feel awkward and too small. but I might just need to get used to them. I'll post more when I've had time to play with it more.
Thanks for the info! I can't wait for mine!
Haven't received any follow up email.
Would you mind sharing your region?
California.
No order email yet. US
My Steam Frame (really, my friend's reservation) is arriving Tuesday, and I'm super excited. Just put of curiousity, I've left the reservation on my own account, to see how long it would have taken.
I'm in the US, and it's a 1 TB
My 256gb Frame is scheduled to arrive tomorrow (US). I got my order email last Monday.
Random side note, I also just got the order email for a Steam Machine after joining the queue at the announcement. I've cooled on that though and won't be ordering one
Not a whisper for me yet. I double checked the steam page to make sure I hadn't been dropped but I'm still there. Slow rollout indeed, I'm in USA
It's comfortable and streaming latency isn't particularly noticeable. Tracking feels generally good. Passthrough isn't nearly so bad as some reviews make it seem. Performance is okay. I'll primarily be streaming anything vaguely heavy.
No Valve! It's too soon!
I mentioned earlier that I was fine with being on the wait list as I recently bought the Machine and getting both would be an expensive ordeal but now I received the reservation email too.
I'm genuinely torn. I do want it. But not yet. Maybe.
That aside, getting the email does mean the wait list is moving up. I can't tell you if that means people are dropping out or if the stock is replenishing though. Either way, others may receive their reservation emails too so keep an eye on your mailbox if you were on the wait list and hoping to snag one.
Important to add, I'm in the EU so this may not apply to the US or elsewhere.
How are you in EU and moving from waitlist to reservations when I didn't get an order e-mail yet??? Well, I suppose timing... Or someone dropped from reservation and it got moved to you, but you are still past me? Who knows :-)
What model have you reserved? You probably should go for it, it would be great to have VR and also a machine to use it with at the same time. That is if you financial situation allows for that, of course.
I reserved the 256gb model. I don't see the added benefit of adding 800gb for another €200 when I'll likely be streaming games through my much more powerful PC.
My finances do allow it though I'll be draining my personal savings. Not a huge deal, my family bank account is in good standing and my own savings will not impact my ability to afford my house. Those are separate bank accounts, and my personal cash is for personal use so in that sense my family would be fine if I got the Frame.
I recently had a scare the RAM in my PC was dying and if I had no savings I couldn't replace them. Healthy finances mean being able to take emergency hits without it impacting day to day life, which I'd be straining if I got the Frame. Now again, these are not life threatening emergencies. The personal "emergency" would mean my hardware or other personal effects breaking down without being able to replace them.
Luckily it's not a terribly difficult choice but I did want to have a little more saved up before spending another rack shortly after buying the Machine. It basically comes down to the fact that I was perfectly ok with waiting but they now "force" me to make a choice.
No idea. It does imply that someone else dropped out and I may be part of the same first wave as you.
I remember you, ypu explained the family/personal finances sometime ago in some other thread. Seems like nice system.you have. I lack powerful GPU and while my personal finances would allow to byu one, I'm not doing that for quite the same reason - I don't want to do such a cut into it. The difference is I can buy GPU anytime I want, you can't do that with Frame.
I suppose someone dropped from reservations and you got this "free" ticket from them but maybe also got moved to the end of reservation queue. God, I can't wait for the e-mail to arrive! I also got 256GB version and while I playn on playing many games on the Frame itself, these are not big games. And I have 512GB card in my Steam Deck if I needed more space.
Yeahhh that's my take on it as well. If I don't buy it right now who knows when the next opportunity will come up. I signed up for the Steam Controller too and that one will not happen until 2027, I don't know if the Frame will have similar delays (side note: I doubt it will take that long, it's probably not as in demand as the Controller because of the price alone but still). Which reminds me that I should unsubscribe for the Controller, I don't actually need one anymore since I got the Steam Machine + Controller bundle.
It is. I never have to discuss with my wife whether or not our finances are able to take a hit like that. I do tell her if I spend a lot, it's still good to know how much we roughly have should something crazy happen. The important thing is that we don't have to ask for permission if it's our own money. Like me, she has her own bank account too for her own spending. We set aside a default amount of our salary for ourselves and send the rest to our shared account. The separation makes it easy to have a little freedom in buying frivolous shit like a Steam Frame or too much Elden Ring collectors edition paraphernalia.
I'd stay in the controller waitlist as well. As you said, you don't know when you will be able to buy one. And you will definitely sometime in the future want second one, be it for your wife ornkids or a friend that just came to visit you.
EDIT: Thinking about it, I should get in the line for controller myself.
I have an 8bitdo Ultimate 2 already. Great for smaller hands and thus my wife. It can't hurt to stay in the queue I guess. Perhaps I can send it to you if I don't need it 😉
I enlisted myself and I will see if I pull the trigger when they finally contact me. Thanks for the offer though, sending the controller isn't worth it though. I will wait, I have 4 PS3 controllers and one OG Steam controller, I have too many already :-D
Ultimate 2 is the one I recommend to others when they ask about controllers. I think you won't likely get better bang for the buck, it seems to be solid controller and pretty cheap as well.
The way I see it there’s nothing to lose buying it. If you change your mind you could always sell at a profit online.
Fair enough. I don't particularly like selling it for a profit, brushes too close to scalping that I'm comfortable with, but it'll sell without too much effort.
