Well wow. I guess they know it's downhill from here now. Single player games are gaining popularity again. Just look at the new God of War.

There's a huge barrier to entry when all your friends are playing the latest expansion and you need to shell out big $$$ to catch up. By making everything but the most recent (or rather, the next) expansion part of the "base" game, you can get people into the game a lot easier.

Honestly it's a smart business move.

It's been like this since forever. The change is that now you don't have to buy the base game anymore. As long as you have a subscription, you have access to everything in the base game.

I agree the world has been getting some great single player games lately, but I don't think Blizzard is thinking about single player at all. Almost every game in their lineup is designed around multiplayer. Diablo being the only exception.

Maybe Blizzard has concluded that loot boxes are hugely more profitable, and require a tiny amount of resources to design new loot, compared to designing new campaigns for WoW. So they're turning WoW into a steady and predictable recurring income stream, while putting their heavy resources toward newer games to hit home runs for big bucks.

I might be biased, since I'm a huge fan of the game, but single player games have nothing to do with WoW's success or failure. They're doing this to make it more accessible to new players, which was always a problem. Many friends of mine refused to try the game because they'd have to buy the base game.

Well, the new God of War is genuinely a great game.

I feel like this is good since WOW was always so expensive and now it allows for new players to try the game more easliy, jump out of it and jump back in whenever they feel like without having to...

Don't you still have to rebut the battle pack?

No, you just buy it once and the expansion content gets unlocked for you as they are phased out. The only thing you need to buy every time is the latest expansion.
