This insect-obsessed game is a full hive of meaningful, show-don’t-tell encounters.

This is well said. After playing Ori (sorry, I know people often compare them), I was at first put-off by the lack of guidance in Hollow Knight. I didn't know what I could do, where I could go, or what I was supposed to be doing at all. I found some bugs, killed them, found a big bug in a room where gates closed us in, and I quickly died. I had no map and no ability to quickly get around; I wasn't really interested. I went back several months later after hearing a friend mention how much they liked the game, and I'm very glad that I did. Sure, Hollow Knight is hard. Like, really hard. I still haven't beaten the final-most boss.

I sometimes listen to the soundtrack on YT and can think back to the amount of frustration I had trying to get to and past the next boss, but I also know the feeling of accomplishment that I got from finally doing so, time after time.

It's a wonderful game for an excellent price.

One of the most amazing things about Hollow Knight for me was how large of a game it is for a $15 base price, and how well-done every aspect of it is. The world looks great, it feels great to play, the sound and music is good, etc. Everything was so high-quality that I was expecting it to be quite short, but it took me over 40 hours to get through everything.

And then even beyond that, they've put out a whole bunch of major, free content updates. I haven't even tried any of them yet, I should really reinstall the game at some point and see what all the new content is like.

The dark souls formula. Works very well for us masochists.

I've got ~35 hours into the game at this point, and I am stuck on a couple bosses myself (specifically Hornet 2 and the Watcher Knights). That being said, I agree that the game has been a really fun time for me. I've had a blast wandering around and unlocking areas and skills. It's a very well-made game, and it runs smoothly and consistently. I almost never feel like if I die it was because of the game's design, but just because I didn't react properly or well enough.

I also have feelings of accomplishment from the things I've overcome to get as far as I have, but at this point, I basically feel like I'm just throwing myself at a wall over and over again. I'm not sure I'll ever finish the whole game, but I do feel like I definitely got my money's worth out of it, and I've enjoyed what I successfully accomplished in the game to date.

It is not a good teacher, at all. It's just happens to seems like that if you happen to have the same ideas of progression of the author(s).

    Quoting the comment:

[...] I've definitely heard stories of people who ended up playing the game in completely the wrong way, couldn't figure out how to progress, and/or simply ended up frustrated in one way or another. [...]

I personally ended up frustrated when I reached a point in which I didn't know where to go anymore because apparently every open way required some kind of approach that I couldn't figure it out.

This trend of praising games that does not "hold your hand" as an euphemism for saying "didn't spend time building a way for the player to not get lost" should really stop.

There is a difference between "not making a complete game" and "show don't tell".

To anyone who's interested but hasn't yet played the game, it's -34% off right now on GOG.
