I'd plug patient gamers if I were on reddit, but anyway, giving a couple of months can only help.

Yup, which is why I didn't pick it up when it launches. It's always good to temper expectations with other peoples' observations.

I get an average of 20 fps regardless of settings :( performance has always kind of been an issue in NMS anyway, but you'd think they would have optimized it a bit by now.

You need a machine upgrade, that is a well below average machine gaming-wise.

Could be due to airflow? I know you said you replaced the case but setting up proper airflow can mean tens of degrees difference.

oh i changed everything except the hard drives, switched between a medium and full tower, put more fans in case, nothing kept the r9 390 from crashing about 10 minutes into any 3d game.

I picked up No Man's Sky recently (after the new update) and have played a few hours, but my PC's a little on the lower end and the performance hasn't been great. This article (and the 17 minute video in it) go over a lot of the options and the impact on performance they have, so hopefully I should be able to try tweaking some things next time and reduce the choppiness a bit.

I know I'm being rather harsh on this game, but this segment of the video just sum it up pretty well: https://youtu.be/kMaRkUTy4fE?t=14m32s

I'm not very excited about it so far. I don't play many of the survival/exploration-type games, so I don't know how much of it is typical game mechanics for that genre, but so far I'm just spending most of my time collecting things almost entirely for the sake of collecting other things. I know that describes a lot of video games, but it's mostly just feeling tedious so far in this one. I think it's mostly that I want to explore (since that's supposed to be the main feature of the game), but there are so many different barriers to actually being able to do it.

I set my ship down somewhere to check out something I see, but then being able to take back off requires that I have Launch Fuel, and to make Launch Fuel requires me to harvest and craft a few different materials. So I have to slowly run around to the places where those are, and while I'm mining those, my mining laser starts running out of power and I have to go harvest something else to recharge that. This whole time, my hazard protection is ticking down as well, and I have to harvest yet another material to keep that charged.

So there are multiple different layers of... well, basically grinding necessary to even be able to set down in my ship for a minute and look at something. I don't know, I assume a lot of this will get easier, but for now the bulk of my playtime is just feeling tedious and not very interesting.

It won't. Save yourself the headache and use this cheatengine script to disable all the time-gating stuff that's irritating you. Infinite Launch Fuel and No Mining Beam Overheat are absolutely essential for me.

I'd love for this game to have more granular difficulty settings. I don't want to go full Creative mode, but some of the tedium in standard is just obnoxious.

Performance aside, it has started to crash without warning on my coop partner. The multiplayer is... weird. The server has authority over the world, but every player has responsibility over saving the player state. So a crash on a client can lead to such a case as items (freshly mined) being lost, as the server remembers them being mined and the crashed client has no recollection of that.

I was meaning to play it in coop, but right now I'm holding off, waiting for them to fix a few more bugs before I dive in again.

The gameplay seems really solid though; just make sure it's what you hope it is - it sure isn't freelancer 2 or star citizen; it's mostly built around the ProcGen it seems. Though I'm only 9h in.

I was going to create a topic myself.

I play on a laptop so I understand that I cannot expect that much performances but... this same PC made The Witcher 3 run on high details without any stuttering (ok, maybe in a moment or two during the whole game) and I find unbeliavable how badly optimis.... I don't even think this is optimised but just badly designed at this point.

I've tried even running the game with all to low settings and 800x600. I mean... 800x600. And still after 10 minutes of playing it begins to slow down and stutter in some places.

It can be the best exploration game ever but to be honest if I cannot play it, it's not gonna be remembered anyway if not for it's failing to deliver.

Hello Games created their own engine for the game, but I've never heard any reason why they didn't just go with Unreal 4 or another off-the-shelf engine. You could argue that making their own engine allows them to make all sorts of customizations in terms of supporting their procedural generation, but many mainstream engines these days (Unreal 4, Unity, Cryengine) give you access to the source code to allow you to make those changes yourself. I can't help but assume that the choice to make their own engine hurt them in terms of both developer time taken and in-game performance.

It's just boring. And I felt that I was constantly farming for materials, instead of exploring. Constantly running out of air/shields used up most of my farming time, just to replenish those.

To contrast some of the comments here, I'm one of the "lucky" people that bought the game at launch. I actually enjoyed the game at launch for what it was as I hadn't paid attention to the hype other than, "cool new space exploration game".

After the NEXT update, I'm absolutely in love with this game. There has been an incredible amount of changes made to the game since launch. Hell, even the space station interiors have drastically changed. I've been having a blast upgrading my ship, suit, multi-tool, while trying to make enough money to buy more freighters to add to my fleet. The missions that were added change the game immensely as well.

On the performance front, I have a relatively high end machine that was built 3 years ago (i7, 980 ti, 64gb ram @ 1440@60) and have not noticed any performance issues other than the occasional hiccup.

On my NEXT playthrough, I'm about 10 hours in, have explored 4 systems so far, and have upgrade my ship from the starter to a class B fighter.

Finally, if you like survival games and like space exploration games, I absolutely recommend this game. There is soo much to do, but it definitely takes some time to get up and running from the start.

I was interested in No Man's Sky for a long time, but I only picked it up during the sales when NEXT came out. And I'm loving it, too. I'm moving very slowly; I've been playing for about the same amount of time as your NEXT playthrough, and I'm only on my starter ship and second system, but that's okay! The game doesn't care if I take a million detours and discover one ancient ruin after another.

I'm probably going to keep this as my "chill exploration game," ignoring any fights and scary hostile systems. The inventory management is a bit of a pain, and I'm terrible at knowing how best to upgrade things, but overall it's great to just hop in, marvel at the rings spanning across the sky of my home planet, and check out those new ruin coordinates.

(I also haven't noticed any major performance issues, but perhaps I don't have a lot to compare it to.)
