I really like the cyberpunk genre, and I feel like it's more relevant than ever. I'm extremely excited for this game. In fact I don't think I've been this hyped since Skyrim came out.

Yeah, same. It's a sensible title for the article, and I'm glad it's about the game and not anything else. I'm really looking forward to it!

I think the title is fine. I'm firmly in the "just post the title from the article" camp. Cyberpunk fans will likely check it because they want to know what's going on either way.

If this game turns out to be nothing more than driving that car around an empty parking lot, I'll still put 1000+ hours into it.

I'm among the crowd that didn't like the trailer for the game, I felt the aesthetic was missing the soul of the cyberpunk genre and the MC's characterisation was grating to be honest. But what literally every games outlet said about their closed doors previews was really encouraging and I found the explanation for going with a daytime portrayal in their trailer to be reasonable. Still going to hold my hype but I am definitely excited to see what this game is going to be.

Blade Runner is probably the best example in film. Judging from the trailer, Cyberpunk 2077 looks like an awesome futuristic universe, but there's nothing noirish about it.

The title of the game is a direct call to the RPG Cyberpunk 2020, not the "cyberpunk" as a genre.

Also, the very author of the RPG (Mike Pondsmith) has been deeply involved into the development of the videogame and is more than enthusiast about it.
So, really, there is nothing to complain about it if the very author of the original opera to which the game is taking inspiration is absolutely loving it.
If it doesn't fit the "general vibe" of the cyberpunk that some people have, they can just skip it and be done with it.

Edit: Here it is an interview from the E3: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6LAH3qE73lE

The developers never announced it as if it should be the game that becomes the perfect representation of the cyberpunk genre.

Oh, yeah, and it would be enough to read something instead of just watching the trailer, to knows that the game was planned since the beginning with a full day/night cycle and that during the night you will have all the noir you want, depending on the area in which you are of course.

You're not being rude at all, but I think you're wrong. The word "cyberpunk" is usually associated with its literary origin, not with some relatively successful RPG, and it's unreasonable to expect the public to make the more obscure association instead of the more obvious one.

I mean, apart from the first 3-4 results from google that are the usual recent articles and the official website, the wikipedia page itself state quite immediately:

Cyberpunk 2077 is an upcoming role-playing video game developed and published by CD Projekt, releasing for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. Adapted from the tabletop game Cyberpunk 2020, it is set fifty-seven years later in dystopian Night City, California, an open world with six distinct regions. In a first-person perspective, players assume the role of the customisable mercenary V, who can apply experience points to stat upgrades to reach prominence in the character classes NetRunner, Techie, and Solo. V has an arsenal of ranged weapons and options for melee combat, all of which can be proliferated and modified. Travelling across Night City, V is subject to either walking or driving various vehicles. Branching dialogues are used for conversations with non-player characters, and multiple endings are available.

I can even understand that the general public, the same that buys GTA5 to complain about the violence, could be confused, but not on tildes ~games group.

But I'm mostly revisiting this thread because I just learned that William Gibson himself had an opinion similar to mine , which I found very interesting.

BTW, I'm watching the released footage right now... it looks awesome. And totally retro-future GTA.

exactly, what i was referring to as the soul is this noir influence that Gibson’s work has and how its inspired other contributors to the canon of cyberpunk works. The MC’s charactisation is also quite far off the mark in this respect, noir isn’t about the ‘young anarchist power fantasy’ that the MC currently evokes.

It would be so beautiful to have a real noirish cyberpunk, with a cynic, pessimist character that shows a glimpse of redemption only to have his worst fears confirmed... but it looks like it will be futuristic GTA. Which will be probably awesome! But I wanted to play Minority Report :(

I'm afraid I don't know what "NPR" means.
