Does the Expansion Pass for Xenoblade Chronicles 2 improve or break it?

I just got Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and am wondering if it makes sense to get the Expension Pass already from the start or rather wait before I finish the game.

What I am concerned about is that it makes the game too easy or that it adds some unneeded items that stick out of the original story/feeling too much.

Is that the case, or is it rather just ironing out some small nit-picks and the DLCs make it better?

It's not like some games where it throws a big glotch of new content at you right at the beginning, it just adds pieces of content (quests, blades, plot) throughout. Playing NG+, the DLC content...

That’s good to hear, but do the additional quests, items and plot change the game too much or is it more in the “ah, yes, I guess that’s how it should have been played in the first place anyway”?...

I apologise for asking, but what is “NG+” here? I just started with Xenoblade (after playing the only the original Xenogears a long long time ago).

They don't change the game noticeably. Sorry for dumping gamer terminology onto you. NG+ is the acronym for "New Game +", a feature in some games where you can replay the game from the beginning...

Sorry for dumping gamer terminology onto you. NG+ is the acronym for "New Game +", a feature in some games where you can replay the game from the beginning but retain the characters as they were in some other save; generally unlocked when you beat the game the first time. This lets you cruise through the story, finish side quests you never got to, solve puzzles that required certain combinations of blades, etc.

Ah, OK. Thanks for explaining :) So would you suggest to first beat the game in vanilla mode and then re-play it as NG+ with the DLCs enabled?

I'd enable the DLC right away. It helps without breaking the game balance, and then if you don't like it enough to play through multiple times you still get the experience.

I did and it does help. What bothers me a bit though is that the DLC menu is so descriptive, that it borders on spoilers.
